Hooked On Love
Dead or Alive Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well I know what I'm thinkin'
Is the direct result of drinkin'
In a heavy mix of intimate atmosphere
And I pray what I'm feelin'
Is insecurity revealin'
Lack of happiness
'Cause I need a body here
And I would be much safer honey
If I could get this stuff for money

'Cause I'm hooked on love
I never ever felt like this before
If you tell me this is love
I better find a good supplier
I simply got to have some more

I was happy without it
Hardly ever thought about it
Thought that it was something
That I could live without
And now I am a victim
Of the dangerous addiction
Tried to keep it a secret
But the word got out
And I try hard to take it easy
But I've got to find some face to please me

'Cause I'm hooked on love
I never ever felt like this before
If you tell me this is love
I better find a good supplier
I simply got to have some more

And now I am a victim
Of the dangerous addiction
Tried to keep it a secret
But the word got out
And I would feel much better about it
If I thought I stood some chance without it

'Cause I'm hooked on love
I never ever felt like this before
If you tell me this is love

I better find a good supplier
I simply got to have some more

Overall Meaning

In Dead or Alive's song "Hooked on Love," the singer seems to be grappling with an addiction to love that has taken over their life. They acknowledge that their desire for love may stem from insecurity and a lack of happiness, but they can't help the way they feel. The line "I need a body here" suggests that the addiction isn't necessarily to true love or a deep emotional connection, but rather to physical intimacy and the feeling of being desired.

The second verse reveals that the singer was once content without love, but has now become a "victim" of this addiction. The line "Tried to keep it a secret / But the word got out" suggests that their obsession with love has become noticeable to others, perhaps causing embarrassment or shame. Despite this, the singer still can't resist the pull of love and expresses a need to find someone to "please" them.

The chorus, with its repetition of "I'm hooked on love" and "I simply got to have some more," emphasizes the addictive nature of the singer's feelings. The line "If you tell me this is love / I better find a good supplier" implies that the singer sees love as a commodity that can be bought and sold, reinforcing the idea that their addiction is more about physical pleasure than emotional connection.

Overall, "Hooked on Love" is a cautionary tale of the dangers of becoming too dependent on love and physical intimacy, and the struggle to break free from such an addiction.

They are so fabulous. It's a shame they didn't have far greater commercial success. A pop brand with such great music, writes their own songs, gorgeous lead singer / front man.
I don't understand it: why they are never played on radio now; why they didn't have other hits as big as Spin Me when they had so many other songs just as good.

Emotic News

It’s always like this, so many artists are so under appreciated

@just love Well said. You know your facts. D or A were more popular than people think. In fact, many songs charted higher in various countries than songs from another great band, The Cure.

If i remember correctly, their label didnt give them full support due to fallout regarding doing promotional works for their albums. Pete didn't like doing those. As a result, they didn't get much airplay in radio stations. Pete also couldn't handle the fame Spin Me brought them so he took some time off from work to spend more time with his mom who was diagnosed with lung cancer. When he came back and was ready to work, the group concentrated on selling their album to Japan, did concerts and guesting there...all the promotional works. Btw, same thing happened in the USA, it was hard to find their albums there, and a lot of people thought they were a one-hit wonder. So sad. All their songs are great and I love them. Miss Pete and Steve 😭❤

Well said! They did deserve more success but I guess Dead or Alive were just ahead of their time. I don’t think it’s a shame they aren’t mainstream because it’s more special for us fans, like our little secret ;)

and who knows they might even go mainstream someday ^^
