New Age Girl
Deadeye Dick Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I've got a new age girl (tell us what she's like)
Environmentalist girl (does she ride a bike?)
She has crystal necklace (does she spend a lot of cash?)
Though her vibes are rather reckless (she's heading for a crash)
Oh, her flowing skirt is blowing in a transcendental wind
And she wonders without knowing where did she begin

Mary Moon, she's a vegetarian
(Mary Moon, Mary Moon, Mary Moon)
Mary Moon will outlive all the septuagenarians
(Mary Moon, Mary Moon, Mary Moon)
Oh, she loves me so, she hates to be alone
Don't eat meat but she sure like the bone

You knew she drives a wind car (how does she like it?)
It doesn't get her far (why doesn't she bike it?)
But it gets her to where she's going to
(I don't know, I don't know, I don't know)
Where that is, wish I knew
Don't know where she's going
And I don't know where she's been
All I know that loving her has gotta be a sin

Mary Moon, she's a vegetarian
(Mary Moon, Mary Moon, Mary Moon)
Mary Moon will outlive all the septuagenarians
(Mary Moon, Mary Moon, Mary Moon)
Oh, she loves me so, she hates to be alone
Don't eat meat but she sure like the bone

Mary Moon, will you hesitate?
Don't segregate your thought from your emotions (Mary Moon)
I know that devotion isn't way up there

Mary Moon, she's a vegetarian
(Mary Moon, Mary Moon, Mary Moon)
Mary Moon will outlive all the septuagenarians
(Mary Moon, Mary Moon, Mary Moon)
Mary Moon, she's an intellectual
(Mary Moon, Mary Moon, Mary Moon)
Mary Moon, despite that fact remains quite sexual
(Mary Moon, Mary Moon, Mary Moon)
Mary Moon
(Mary Moon, Mary Moon, Mary Moon)
Oh, Mary Moon
(Mary Moon, Mary Moon, Mary Moon)
Mary Moon

(Mary Moon, Mary Moon, Mary Moon)
She's the one for me, me, oh

Overall Meaning

The song “New Age Girl” by Deadeye Dick is a humorous ode to a woman who embodies the hippie, new age and environmentalist movements. She is described as having a crystal necklace and her flowing skirt blows in a “transcendental wind”, reflecting her new age lifestyle. The lyrics indicate that although she spends a lot of money on her crystals, her “vibes” (meaning her way of life) are reckless and headed for a crash. The second verse reveals that Mary Moon, as she is named, is a vegetarian who drives a car powered by wind, but the song is unclear about where she is going or where she has been. Mary Moon hates to be alone and is described as both an intellectual and quite sexual.

The song “New Age Girl” can be seen as a commentary on the counterculture of the 1990s. The lyrics celebrate the new age and environmentalist movements, but they also poke fun at the tendency of its followers to be reckless and aimless at times. The song can be interpreted as a reminder that even though someone might be interested in living a more sustainable and holistic life, that alone does not mean they have it all figured out.

Same! I remember singing along as a kid. My mom heard me say “she don’t eat meat, but she sure like the bone”. She was shocked and told me not to say that anymore. I had no clue why.

I don't even know where the hell my brain dug this out in my brain. Pretty sure it was filed away in a locked closet of an abandoned house or something. But! I'm totally glad my brain got me to think about it.
