No money no food and dirty clothes
Don't know which way to go
Or if we'll even make the show?
Crashed into a petrol pump there goes my insurance lump
I just want out of here
Someone gives me a fucking beer
TONIGHT, TONIGHT...IT'LL BE ALRIGHT
TONIGHT, TONIGHT...I'M GONNA MAKE IT RIGHT
SOMEONE GET ME OUT OF HERE
Next day we're up again
Slept rough yet again
Heading into no man's land
With a tongue that feels like desert sand
6 stitches from a bicycle ride
It's a shame I cannot hide
3 pasta meals per day
And a pittance for our fucking pay but...
[Ref]
Now we're on our way back home
Still no signal on the phone
Just wanna eat some grub
And have a night out down the pub
Here I stare at the van again
Everyone is sleeping on everything
They all gonna feel the same
Homeward bound from where we came cos...
The lyrics of "On the Road" by Deadline are very relatable for any struggling musician or artist who is on the road, away from home, performing at shows, and trying to make ends meet. The first verse describes the difficulties faced by the band members, who have no money, no food, and dirty clothes after touring. They are clueless about which way to go and if they will make it to their next show. The band then crashes into a petrol pump, leading to an unexpected insurance payout. The only thing that can save them in this situation is a cold beer from a generous stranger.
In the second verse, the band wakes up and heads towards their next destination, which is a no man's land. They continue to face struggles with physical injuries like stitches from a bicycle ride and a dry mouth like desert sand. However, they continue to work hard, eating pasta three times a day and receiving only a small amount of pay. They keep pushing forward to make it to their destination and to provide for themselves.
The chorus provides the promise of hope that the band members hold onto: tonight, everything will be alright, and they will make everything right. All they need is someone to get them out of this situation. The final verse shows that the journey is almost over, and they are finally heading back home with no signal on the phone. However, they still face the same struggles that they did at the beginning of the song. With everyone sleeping in the van, they long for a home-cooked meal and a night out at the pub.
Overall, "On the Road" is a powerful anthem for musicians and artists everywhere who understand the struggles of being away from home, trying to make a living while doing what they love.
