Blunt embarked on his solo career in 2011, releasing a set of albums as well as several EPs and singles. His full-length studio albums, The Narcissist II (2012), The Redeemer (2013), and Black Metal (2014), received attention and praise from various music publications.
Blunt has also hosted conceptual art exhibitions in the past, an example of this is a minimalist exhibition displaying a building site hoarding wall accompanied by a crowd dispersal alarm.[citation needed].
Blunt is also known for his playfulness and obfuscation. In 2015, he sent his bodyguard to accept his Philip Hall Radar Award at the NME awards. In 2016, he listed a toy Foxtons estate agents Mini Cooper filled with marijuana on eBay. At a New York concert, in March 2016, media guests were asked to check in under aliases that they had received with their ticket confirmations.
the rot
Dean Blunt Lyrics

You might as well relax
′Cause the fear is going down, down, down
I told you to leave
But you never do it
So this fear is growng on, on, on
See it coming down, down, down
And I guess it'll rot away
And I found you here on another day
You′re waiting for an old dream
Found you on another day
All is spoken, after that
There's a desert left behind
You're a stranger in a dark room
Holding on to someone new
I am waiting on a old dream
Holding on to someone new, ooh
For a moment I′ve been waiting
Stranger in a dark room
See it going down, down, down
Said it′s going down, down, down
The lyrics to Dean Blunt's song "the rot" seem to convey a sense of resignation and acceptance towards a situation that is slowly deteriorating. The singer acknowledges that they have urged someone to relax and not worry, as they believe the fear or anxiety they are experiencing will diminish over time. However, despite telling this person to leave and move on, they remain stuck in this cycle, causing the fear to intensify and gradually consume them. The repeated phrase "see it going down, down, down" suggests a downward spiral or descent into a worsening state.
The second verse introduces the idea of finding someone in a different state or time, possibly referring to encountering someone who represents a past dream or longing. But despite this encounter, the situation remains uncertain, with the singer addressing the listener as a stranger in a dark room, holding onto someone new. The repeated phrase "waiting on an old dream" implies a longing for something from the past, while also acknowledging the uncertainty of holding onto someone new in the present.
Overall, the lyrics of "the rot" convey a mixture of resignation, introspection, and the acceptance of an ongoing decay or decline. The singer seems to be observing and reflecting on a situation that they recognize may never improve, while also acknowledging the complexities of their own emotions and desires.

I told her relax
I reassured her to calm down
You might as well relax
There's no better option than to calm down
′Cause the fear is going down, down, down
As the fear diminishes, it is decreasing rapidly
I told you to leave
I advised you to depart
But you never do it
Yet, you persistently refuse to do so
So this fear is growing on, on, on
Consequently, fear is intensifying persistently
See it coming down, down, down
Observe how it gradually diminishes
And I guess it'll rot away
I assume it will decompose eventually
And I found you here on another day
I unexpectedly discovered you in a different time
You′re waiting for an old dream
You anticipate the fulfillment of a past aspiration
Found you on another day
Encountered you at a different moment
All is spoken, after that
Everything has been communicated, following that
There's a desert left behind
Only an empty, barren space remains
You're a stranger in a dark room
In an obscure room, you are an unfamiliar presence
Holding on to someone new
Clasping onto a different individual
I am waiting on a old dream
I am patiently anticipating an past aspiration
Holding on to someone new, ooh
Clinging to an unfamiliar person
For a moment I've been waiting
For a while, I have patiently waited
Stranger in a dark room
An unfamiliar presence residing in obscurity
See it going down, down, down
Observe how it gradually diminishes
Said it's going down, down, down
Confirmed that it is steadily decreasing

I was in a really dark place around this time last year and kept coming back to this song. It's one of those really rare songs that speaks to you during the part of your life when you needed it most. It'll always be important to me for that reason.
