Dean Brody was born in Jaffray, British Columbia, Canada.[2] As a boy, Brody worked at a sawmill, also playing guitar in his spare time. By 2004, he had moved to Nashville, Tennessee to pursue his musical career. Although he found a songwriting contract, the expiration of his US work permit forced him to move back to Canada. Eventually, he returned to Nashville through the suggestion of producer Keith Stegall, who helped him sign with Broken Bow Records in 2008.[2] Brody released his debut single, "Brothers", late that year. Shortly before its release, Brody was injured in a waterskiing accident.[3]

I was hiding in my room
As my brother made his way on down the hall
I didn't want to say goodbye
And I was trying to deny there was a war
And that he got the call
I watched him from my windowWalking down the drive
Then I ran down the stairway
Through the front door and I cried
You come back you hear?
And I let him see my tears
I said, "I'll give you my rookie of DiMaggio
I'll do anything you want
Clean your room, or wash your car
I'll do anything so long as you don't go"
But he said, "This is what brothers are for"
Well I have my heroes
But the one I love the most
Taught me how to hunt and swing a bat
And I wrote him every night
I said, I miss our pillow fights
But lately I just wonder where you're at
Sometimes freedom makes it hard to live
When it takes things from you that you don't want to give
I said, "You come back you hear?
I miss you being near
We'll laugh and fish down in the maple grove"
I'll do anything you want
And just maybe they would let you come back home
But he wrote, this is what brothers are for
I may never have to face the anger of those guns
Or lie cold and wounded in my blood
Or know the sacrifice and what it must of cost
For him to love me that much
Well, it had been two years
And I held back my tears
When I saw him in that wheel chair on the shore
And as I ran and held him tight
That's when he looked me in the eye
And said, "I'm sorry that you have to push me home"
And I said, "Hey, this is what brothers are for"
The song "Brothers" by Dean Brody is a heartfelt ballad that tells the story of two brothers and the sacrifices they make for one another. The song starts with the singer hiding in his room as his brother prepares to leave for the war. He is in denial about the reality of the situation and doesn't want to say goodbye. He eventually comes down to see his brother off and offers to do anything to convince him to stay. However, his brother knows he has to go, and that's "what brothers are for."
The singer then writes to his brother every night, expressing how much he misses him and hoping that he will return home. He understands that freedom can be hard to live with when it takes things away from you, and he longs for the days when they will be able to fish and laugh together again. But as time passes, he realizes the cost of his brother's sacrifice and the depth of his love. Two years later, the singer sees his brother in a wheelchair at the shore, and he runs to him, holding him tight. His brother apologizes for being a burden, but the singer reassures him, saying "Hey, this is what brothers are for."
The song is a beautiful portrayal of brotherly love, sacrifice, and the pain of separation. It touches on themes of war, heroism, and the value of family bonds. It's a tribute to the many sacrifices that are made every day by both soldiers and civilians, and it reminds listeners of the importance of cherishing the relationships that matter most.

I had three brothers, two sisters, and Mom crying that morning in 1971 when I was leaving, but when I went to hug my Dad and saw tears in the eyes of a man I had never seen cry, it shook me. Years later when I was that Dad putting my son on a plane for Iraq, I think I knew how my father felt that morning. It was so much easier being the son going than the father staying. I thank my God that he came home safe. Right or wrong, this is my country; and me and mine will defend her always. Please let America be worth God's Blessing, again.

When I had to leave and go to Iraq my brother told me please don't go. I told him this is what brother's are for. I didn't know it at the time that this song even existed and now I can't listen to it without crying because my brother had to do the same thing him and his brother were doing.
