Dean Brody was born in Jaffray, British Columbia, Canada.[2] As a boy, Brody worked at a sawmill, also playing guitar in his spare time. By 2004, he had moved to Nashville, Tennessee to pursue his musical career. Although he found a songwriting contract, the expiration of his US work permit forced him to move back to Canada. Eventually, he returned to Nashville through the suggestion of producer Keith Stegall, who helped him sign with Broken Bow Records in 2008.[2] Brody released his debut single, "Brothers", late that year. Shortly before its release, Brody was injured in a waterskiing accident.[3]

Four-wheel drive, know how to lock it in
Tie your own line, hook your own bait
Been hooked on you since the very first date
Lookin' hotter than the summer heat
Got your white dress dancing muddy in the creek
I learned real quick you can kick itNot your first time 'round frogs and some crickets
Baby, tell me where you learned how to do that
Had to be somewhere country if you knew that
Who's that hometown team on your ball cap?
Must be where they talk with a drawl say y'all at
You say it's just a little bitty dot on a map
Little nitty-gritty city, nothin' wrong with that
Really wanna meet your ma and your dad
So when you gonna take me back to where you learned how to do that?
Where you learned how to do that
When you gonna take me back out there
Where you learned how to do that, do that
Hand-cut denim, went and turned 'em into daisies
Way you two steppin' in them ol' Lucchese's
Got the Boondock bar going crazy
Got this whole place thinkin, aw hell
Where'd you learn how to do that?
Had to be somewhere country if you knew that
Who's that hometown team on your ball cap?
Must be where they talk with a drawl say y'all at
You say it's just a little bitty dot on a map
Little nitty-gritty city, nothin' wrong with that
Really wanna meet your ma and your dad
Where you learned how to do that
When you gonna take me back out there
Where you learned how to do that, do that
Where'd you learn to shoot moonshine like you do?
Must've been way out there in Timbuktu
'Cause I ain't never met a girl like you
Anywhere in the world like you
Baby, take me where you learned how to do that
Had to be somewhere country if you knew that
Who's that hometown team on your ball cap?
Must be where they talk with a drawl say y'all at
You say it's just a little bitty dot on a map
Little nitty-gritty city, nothin' wrong with that
Really wanna meet your ma and your dad
So when you gonna take me back to where you learned how to do that?
Where you learned how to do that
When you gonna take me back out there
Where you learned how to do that, do that
Where'd you learn to shoot moonshine like you do
Must've been way out there in Timbuktu
'Cause I ain't never met a girl like you
Anywhere in the world like you
Baby, tell me
Dean Brody's song "Where'd You Learn How To Do That" tells the story of the singer's admiration for a girl who exhibits a deep knowledge and understanding of country life. Throughout the song, Brody highlights her capabilities such as driving a stick shift truck through mud, knowing how to lock in four-wheel drive, tying her own line, and hooking her own bait. He also notes her ability to dance in a muddy creek while wearing a white dress and turning hand-cut denim into daisies. The singer is smitten with this girl, but it's not just her abilities that intrigue him; it's also her background.
He wants to know where she learned all of these things that make her so unique and attractive to him. He suspects that she must have grown up in a small, rural town where people talk with a drawl and wear ball caps supporting the local team. He admires her and longs to meet her family and visit her hometown. Through "Where'd You Learn How To Do That", Dean Brody paints a picture of a girl who is confident, capable, and deeply connected to her country roots.
The song is relatable to anyone who grew up in a small town or has a deep appreciation for country living. It speaks to the idea that one's background and upbringing can shape who they are as a person and what they are capable of achieving.
