Be Alright
Dean Lewis Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I look up from the ground
To see your sad and teary eyes
You look away from me
And I see there's something you're tryna hide
And I reach for your hand but it's cold
You pull away again
And I wonder what's on your mind
And then you say to me you made a dumb mistake
You start to tremble and your voice begins to break
You say the cigarettes on the counter weren't your friend's
They were my mate's
And I feel the color draining from my face

And my friend said
"I know you love her, but it's over, mate
It doesn't matter, put the phone away
It's never easy to walk away, let her go
It'll be alright"

So I still look back at all the messages you'd sent
And I know it wasn't right, but it was fucking with my head
And everything deleted like the past, yeah, it was gone
And when I touched your face, I could tell you're moving on
But it's not the fact that you kissed him yesterday
It's the feeling of betrayal, that I just can't seem to shake
And everything I know tells me that I should walk away
But I just wanna stay

And my friend said
"I know you love her, but it's over, mate
It doesn't matter, put the phone away
It's never easy to walk away, let her go
It'll be okay
It's gonna hurt for a bit of time
So bottoms up, let's forget tonight
You'll find another and you'll be just fine
Let her go"

But nothing heals the past like time
And they can't steal
The love you're born to find
But nothing heals the past like time
And they can't steal
The love you're born to find

"I know you love her, but it's over, mate
It doesn't matter, put the phone away
It's never easy to walk away, let her go
It'll be okay
It's gonna hurt for a bit of time
So bottoms up, let's forget tonight
You'll find another and you'll be just fine
Let her go"

It'll be alright
It'll be alright
It'll be alright
It'll be alright
It'll be alright

Overall Meaning

The first verse of the song describes a moment of pain and confusion within a relationship. The singer is looking up at his partner and sees sadness and tears in her eyes. She looks away and seems to be hiding something. The singer tries to reach for her hand, but she pulls away, leaving him wondering what's going on. She then reveals that she made a mistake, specifically that the cigarettes on the counter were not her friend's, but his mate's. This confession leaves the singer shocked and confused.

In the second verse, the singer is still holding on to the past, looking back at the messages his partner sent, even though he knows it's not right. He can tell that she's moving on and has even kissed someone else, but he still wants to stay with her despite feeling betrayed. His friend advises him to let her go, as it's never easy to walk away from a relationship, but that eventually, things will be alright. The final verse repeats this sentiment, saying that time heals all wounds and that love cannot be stolen, but rather it's something that will be found eventually.

Overall, "Be Alright" is a relatable song about the pain and healing that comes with the end of a relationship. The singer is struggling to come to terms with the betrayal of his partner, but knows that eventually he will be able to move on and find love again.

Just had the love of my life leave me for my other friend and he was my best friend. My parents just think I'm overeating but really I'm not. I almost killed myself and got taken to the crisis center and instead of my parents embracing me telling me that they love me they pushed me away and told me i'm just an existence in this world.
