By the Time I Get to Phoenix
Dean Martin Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

By the time I get to Phoenix, she'll be risin'
She'll find the note I left hangin' on her door
She'll laugh when she reads the part that says I'm leavin'
'Cause I've left that gal so many times before

By the time I make Albuquerque, she'll be working
She'll probably stop at lunch and give me a call
But she'll just hear that phone keep on ringing
Off the wall, that's all

By the time I make Oklahoma, she'll be sleeping
She'll turn softly, call my name out low
And she'll cry just to think, I'd really leave her

Though time and time, I've tried to tell her so
She just didn't know, I would really go

Overall Meaning

The song “By the Time I Get to Phoenix” by Dean Martin is a poignant ballad that explores the idea of a man leaving his partner for the umpteenth time, and her possibly not realizing that this time, he would really go. It can be interpreted as a story of a man who had to leave his partner because of his own restlessness, without any fault of hers. The song opens with the statement that by the time he arrives in Phoenix, she'll already be awake and notice the note he left. This statement reflects the theme of the inevitability of their separation as something that is bound to happen again and again.

The song reflects on the physical distance between the two people, and how it is representative of the emotional distance that has developed between them. As the song progresses, he mentions places he'll pass through where she will be doing things that are part of her daily routine. Although he imagines her calling him while she's on her lunch break, the line “But she'll just hear that phone keep on ringing off the wall, that's all” suggests that she may not even be home, or that he doesn't expect her to pick up at all. The next few lines describe her sleeping while he’s close by yet she still feels a separation from him. The song’s punch line - “She just didn't know I would really go” - reveals that he’s never been able to convince her that he’ll be back, and she’s always been under the impression that he’ll come back as he’s always done before.

Can I just say it ?? I'm in tears. I so, so remember watching this man do this song & while sitting in my Dad's rocker recliner, I was again, in tears. The amazing thing to me : My Dad--a man who almost never did, was also in tears. Dean could do that to me, almost anytime he really decided to sing a sad love song. he did it like no one else I've ever heard. Where oh where, have the years gone ??? Miss you Dad.   Wolfsky9, 68 y/o
