Canadian Sunset
Dean Martin Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Once I was alone
So lonely, and then
You came out of nowhere
Like the sun up from the hills

Cold, cold was the wind
Warm, warm were your lips
Out there on the ski trail
Where your kiss filled me with thrills

A weekend in Canada, a change of scene
Was the most I bargained for
And then I discovered you and in your eyes
I found a love that I couldn't ignore

Down, down came the sun
Fast, fast beat my heart
I knew as the sun set
From that day, we'd never part

Down, down, down, down came the sun
Fast, fast, fast, fast beat my heart
I knew as the sun set
From that day, we'd never part

Down, down, down, down came the sun
Fast, fast, fast, fast beat my heart
I knew as the sun set
From that day, we'd never part

We'd never part, we'd never part
We'd never part

Overall Meaning

Dean Martin's song "Canadian Sunset" tells the story of a person who was once alone and lonely, but then someone came out of nowhere and changed their life. The lyrics describe the encounter as being as miraculous as the rising sun from the hills, and the new person brought warmth to the singer's life that he had never felt before. The setting for this encounter was on a ski trail in Canada, where the new person's kiss filled the singer with thrills. The weekend in Canada that the singer had initially planned for turned out to be completely different than what he bargained for, as he discovered a deep and meaningful love in the eyes of the person he met.

The lyrics are full of imagery that evoke the peaceful and serene setting of a Canadian sunset. The description of the cold wind and warm kisses is evocative of the emotional journey the singer has been through. While the beginning of the song talks about loneliness and isolation, it ends on a hopeful note, with the singer realizing that he has found someone he will never part from.

This is simply the best version of this song I've ever heard. Dean's phrasing, the way he articulates the rhyming scheme. Brilliant. Seriously, Dean Martin - in this prime - was an excellent song stylist. A much warmer voice than Sinatra... although Mr. Sinatra had so many obvious vocal talents, Dean's voice was simply more expressive, in my opinion.

In fact, the entire "A Winter Romance" LP is a wonderful holiday treasury with just enough of the classics to suit all tastes, but others that make a Christmas album new and refreshing.

Roger Wilco Well stated!

Dean was more sonorous, and had a richer voice. His phrasing was not as jazzy as Sinatra. Actually, Dean had a high estimation of Bing Crosby, and would sit in the movie theater in Steubenville all day trying to get ideas from Crosby.

Just love it, his music and Dean.

Vita I agree with you. I feel the same way.

Etta James did a great jazz arrangement with this one too, but in this particular case, a commercial, over-produced version was actually superior. God, what a great vocal.
