Come Back to Sorrento
Dean Martin Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Guarda il mare com'e bello
Spira tanto sentimento
Come il tuo soave accento, che me desto fa sognar
Senti come illeve salle, dai giardini odor d'aranci

Smiling leave I saw you taking
All that once you loved forsaken
And I felt my heart was breaking
Oh how could you go away

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Dean Martin's song 'Come Back to Sorrento' are a beautiful representation of a lover's appeal to his beloved. The opening lines, "Guarda il mare com'e bello, spiri tanto sentimento" (Look at how beautiful the sea is, it breathes so much feeling), describe the serene beauty of Sorrento and the intensity of the emotions that the singer is feeling. He compares the rhythmic sound of the sea waves to his beloved's sweet accent that rekindles his dreams of a happy life together. The scent of the orange groves adds to the romantic atmosphere, making him feel as if he is overflowing with love.

Despite the beauty of their surroundings, the singer's beloved is leaving him and his heart is filled with sorrow. He says, "Hai la forza di lasciar, ma non mi fuggir, non darmi più tormento" (You have the strength to leave, but don't run away from me, don't give me more pain). He pleads with her to come back to Sorrento and not let him die of a broken heart. The closing lines, "Ma non mi fuggir, non dar mi più tormento, Torna a Sorrento non farmi morir" (But don't run away from me, don't give me more pain, Come back to Sorrento, don't let me die), express his deep desire for her return and his fear of losing her forever.

Look at the sea how beautiful it is!
Guarda il mare com'e bello!

There is so much feeling.
Spira tanto sentimento.

Like your sweet accent, which makes me dream when I wake up.
Come il tuo soave accento, che me desto fa sognar.

Feel how illeve salle, from the gardens smell of orange trees,
Senti come illeve salle, dai giardini odor d'aranci,

A perfume has no equal for those who throb with love.

And you say goodbye,
E tu dicro parto addio,

You leave my heart, this land of love,

You have the strength to let go.
Hai la forza di lasciar.

But don't run away from me, don't give me more torment, go back to Sorrento don't let me die!
Smiling leave I saw you taking,
Smiling leave I saw you taking,

All that once you loved forsaking.
All that once you loved forsaking.

And I felt my heart was breaking,
And I felt my heart was breaking,

Oh how could you go away.
Oh how could you go away.
But don't run away from me, don't give me more torment, go back to Sorrento don't let me die!

On a senior HS trip to Italy we had our last day in Sorrento and were heading back to Rome on the bus and as we were driving down the hillside, the driver played this song over the music system. All the girls cried 😢

Dino was the best singer on the planet. Even Sinatra couldn't hold a candle to him in comparison. His intimations of each word is emotionally heartfelt. I am Italian Eric an and this is my favorite song . Torna Suffice to makes one cry. Leaving Italy made me cry as well. Dino, if you can hear this...."Your the BEST".........Julio Iglesias is right there next to you. P.S. Frank Sinatra is wife preferred Julio over her husband, old blue eyes, he said so himself....gotta laugh @ that one !

This video w/ showing beautiful Sorrento was well done. Kudos, Dino would have loved it, he was such a mellow endearing man, God bless him...😇

Sorrento is my favorite city. I want to go back to visit. It stole my heart in 1990. This song and photos with Dean Martin singing. Oh, how relaxing.
