I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter
Dean Martin Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm gonna sit right down and write myself a letter
And make believe it came from you
I'm gonna write words, oh, so sweet
They're gonna knock me off my feet
A lotta kisses at the bottom
I'll be glad I got 'em

I'm gonna smile and say "I hope that you're much better"
And then I'll close the way I do
I'm gonna sit right down and write myself a letter
And make believe that it came from you

I'm gonna smile and say "I hope that you're much better"
The I'll close "with love" the way you do
I'm gonna sit right down and knock out a very large letter
And make believe it came

Although it's not the same
I'll make believe it came from you

Overall Meaning

The song "I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter" by Dean Martin, written by Fred E. Ahlert and Joe Young, is a jazzy tune that speaks to the power of nostalgia and imagination. The song's narrator is feeling lonely and misses someone, but instead of waiting for a letter or communication from that person, they decide to take matters into their own hands and write a letter to themselves. In a touch of romantic whimsy, the singer pretends that the letter came from the person they're missing, using their imagination to conjure up sweet words and kisses that bring them joy.

The song's upbeat tempo and catchy melody contrast with the underlying loneliness and longing in the lyrics, creating a bittersweet mood. The lyrics also play with the idea of the written word as a vehicle for feeling and emotion, and how even a letter written to oneself can bring comfort and connection.

Overall, "I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter" is a charming and playful song that touches on the human desire for connection and the power of imagination.

Dean had so much fun joking around while singing, that was part of his charm and talent. He knew he was good but never faulted it. Garrison once said by the time the credits were rolling after the show Dean was out the door. He would give his best and out he went. Gotta love him.
