On the Street Where You Live
Dean Martin Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I have often walked
Down the street before,
But the pavement always stayed
Beneath my feet before
All at once am I
Several stories high,
Knowing I'm on the street where you live
Are there lilac trees
In the heart of town?
Can you hear a lark in any other part of town?
Does enchantment pour
Out of every door?
No, it's just on the street where you live

And oh, the towering feeling
Just to know somehow you are near
The overpowering feeling
That any second you may suddenly appear

People stop and stare
They don't bother me,
For there's no where else on earth
That I would rather be

Let the time go by,
I won't care if I
Can be here on the street where you live

People stop and stare
They don't bother me,
For there's no where else on earth
That I would rather be

Let the time go by
I won't care if I
Can be here on the street where you live,

Can be here on the street where you live,

Can be here on the street where you live

Overall Meaning

The Dean Martin classic "On the Street Where You Live" reflects the sensation of being in love, and the feeling of being so close to the person you love, no matter where you are, that you feel like you're walking on air. The song tells of a man who is walking down a familiar street, but suddenly, everything feels different, he's several stories high, and just being there makes him feel like he's in heaven.

The song's first verse is all about the initial feeling of elation that comes with falling in love. The city streets he's walked down countless times before suddenly feel much more magical because the object of his affections is there. This notion is metaphorical. He’s feeling romantic around new life and possibilities brought by love.

In the second verse, his fantasies get wild as he asks if there are lilac trees in the heart of town, or if he can hear a lark in any other part of town. He then asks if every door oozes enchantment or is it just the street where she lives. It's all about feeling that the place where the person you love is your home, your place of belonging.
