God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen
Dean Martin & Nat King Cole Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

God rest ye merry, gentlemen let nothing you dismay
Remember, Christ our Savior was born on Christmas day
To save us all from Satan's power when we were gone astray
O tidings of comfort and joy, comfort and joy, O tidings of comfort and joy

From God our Heavenly Father a blessed Angel came
And unto certain shepherds brought tidings of the same
How that in Bethlehem was born the Son of God by name
O tidings of comfort and joy, comfort and joy, O tidings of comfort and joy

Now to the Lord sing praises all you within this place
And with true love and brotherhood each other now embrace

This holy tide of Christmas all other doth deface
O tidings of comfort and joy, comfort and joy, O tidings of comfort and joy

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Dean Martin and Nat King Cole’s song God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen is a classic Christmas carol that celebrates the birth of Christ. The song opens with a call to all β€œmerry gentlemen” to find comfort and joy in Christ’s birth, and to let go of any worries or fears they may have. The song then goes on to explain that Christ came to save us from Satan’s power when we had strayed from the path of righteousness. This reminds us that we can always turn to Christ in times of trouble, and that he is our savior.

The song goes on to tell the story of how a blessed angel came to certain shepherds and brought them tidings of the baby Jesus, who had been born in Bethlehem. The angel’s message was one of hope and good news, and it brought great joy to the shepherds. The song then concludes with a call to all those listening to sing praises to the Lord and to show true love and brotherhood to those around them. This message is a reminder that Christmas is a time of love, joy, and hope, and that we should all strive to embody these qualities in our lives.
