Folsom Prison Blues / That's All Right Mama
Dean Ray Lyrics

I hear the train a comin'
It's rolling round the bend
And I ain't seen the sunshine since
I don't know when
I'm stuck in folsom prison
And time keeps draggin' on
But that train keeps a rollin
On down to san anton

When I was just a baby
My mama told me, "son always be a good boy
Don't ever play with guns"
But I shot a man in reno
Just to watch him die
When I hear that whistle blowing
I hang my head and cry

I bet there's rich folks eating
In a fancy dining car
They're probally drinkin' coffee
And smoking big cigarrs
Well I know I had it coming
I know I can't be free
But those people keep a movin'
And that's what tortures me

Well if they'd free me from this prison
If that railroad train was mine
I bet I'd move on just a
Little further down the line
Far from folsom prison
That's where I want to stay
And I'd let that lonesome whistle
Blow my blues away

That's alright with mama
That's alright for you
That's alright with mama yeah anyway you do
But that's alright that's alright
That's alright now mama anyway you do

Well mama, she don't told me
And papa don't told me too
"Son that girl you're fooling with
She ain't no good for you"
But that's alright that's alright
Well that's alright now mama anyway you do

That's alright, that's alright

That's alright now mama anyway you do
Haha! Yeah!

Overall Meaning

The song "Folsom Prison Blues/That's All Right Mama" by Dean Ray is a stirring ballad that tells the story of a man who is trapped in Folsom Prison, unable to escape the guilt of a murder he committed. The lyrics open with the sound of a train approaching, a symbol of hope, yet the man languishes in his cell with no sign of relief. The repetition of the train symbolizes the passage of time, and as the train travels on to San Antonio, the man yearns for freedom.

The second verse reveals the reason for the singer's imprisonment: he shot a man in Reno just to watch him die. The lyrics subtly explore the complexity of human motives, revealing the deep feelings of regret and shame that accompany a senseless act of violence. The song's chorus reflects the man's anguished sense of displacement: he knows that he deserves to be locked up for his crime, yet he longs desperately for freedom.

The final verse provides an eerie contrast to the earlier lyrics, as the man imagines "rich folks" eating fancy meals and smoking cigars in a luxurious dining car. The juxtaposition of these two worlds emphasizes the man's sense of isolation and despair. Despite his bleak circumstances, the song ends on a note of resignation, as the man concludes that he will never be able to escape his fate.

He can't sing Johnny Cash songs. He did them his way but it was a disgrace to the singer of the songs and the writer of them too. I didn't like this at all I'm a Johnny Cash fan for years and this guy needs to stay away from his songs. His voice don't fit the deep notes of Johnny Cash and he didn't have the right tune to the songs not good at all.

He wasn't trying to do Johnny Cash the Johnny Cash way .. He does things his own way , if you don't like it move on , its that easy

Albert Lambert

Johnny cash is Johnny cash...he never tried to be one ...so he sings Johnny cash dean ray style...just be happy Johnny cash is still loved n known by newer generations because artist like him covers them...why even think if one sings an artist song it has to be that artist way of singing...grow up...
