Love Ain't Worth Making
Deana Carter Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Why did you have to forsake me
Couldn't you tell me goodbye
I've been waking up lately with tears in my eyes

Love ain't worth making, when it makes you the fool
A chance ain't worth taking
My heart is breaking
When she's holding you

You don't know how happy you made me
Couldn't you give it one more try
I know her arms are waiting to hold you tonight

Love ain't worth making, when it makes you the fool
A chance ain't worth taking
My heart is breaking
When she's holding you

So go on and pack up what's left
Of all that we shared
You're leaving me lonely tonight

Love ain't worth making, when it makes you the fool
A chance ain't worth taking

My heart is breaking
When she's holding you

Overall Meaning

Deana Carter's song "Love Ain't Worth Making" is a poignant expression of the pain of unrequited love. The lyrics convey a sense of betrayal and the bitterness of being left behind by someone you loved. The opening lines, "Why did you have to forsake me / Couldn't you tell me goodbye," speak to the singer's sense of confusion and disbelief at the sudden end of a relationship. This emotion is echoed in the second verse, where she pleads, "Couldn't you give it one more try / I know her arms are waiting to hold you tonight."

The chorus of the song is a powerful declaration that contrasts with the verses' pleading tone. The lyrics suggest that the cost of love is too high if it involves being made a fool, and that taking a chance on love is not worth the risk of heartbreak. The lines, "Love ain't worth making, when it makes you the fool / A chance ain't worth taking / My heart is breaking / When she's holding you" reflect the singer's anger and resentment at being left behind for another woman. The final verse has a sense of finality and resignation, with the singer packing up the remnants of the relationship and acknowledging that love is not worth the pain it has caused.

Overall, "Love Ain't Worth Making" is a powerful and emotional song that explores themes of love, loss, and heartbreak. The lyrics express the pain of being left behind by someone you loved and the bitterness of seeing that person move on with their life. Godda** I had be dumb enough to look this up after she stole the CMA’s with Strawberry Wine and said it had been 25 years. That would put me along the lines of 21 when I spun grooves in the CD with this.

They need to advertise this 25th anniversary edition better.
