Over the past year, the girls' live demos and videos have circulated online. Deap Vally officially released their debut single, 'Gonna Make My Own Money', on Ark Recordings on July 30th, 2012. 'Gonna Make My Own Money' received an overwhelming positive response in both the U.S. and the U.K. They played their first London show at the Old Blue Last pub and venue in early July, where several other bands have made their mark. They have also landed spots at music festivals such as Hyde Park with Iggy Pop in London, United Kingdom, Latitude Festival in Henham Park in Suffolk, United Kingdom, and are set to play Reading and Leeds Festival in late August[when?]. Their live shows draw similar comparisons to Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney of The Black Keys, as well as guitar blues influences from Jack White.
Deap Vally will close out the 2012 year with a debut performance in Japan in November, where they will share the stage with the likes of Thurston Moore and Dinosaur Jr., among others.
Deap Vally's debut album will be released under Island Records / Communion in 2013.
Drought
Deap Vally Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
It's hot as hell and I can't get out
Draught, draught
That's what livin' in the valley's all about
And mama says don't play in the sprinklers, yeah
My daddy says don't take long showers, yeah
My baby says he wants to love me for hours
We're gonna break free, we're gonna bust out
Get me high, get me out
We're gonna break free, we're gonna bust out
Get me high, get me out
Swim, swim
Push me in the pool, boy, I'm gonna get wet
Swim, swim
Push me in the pool, boy, push me in the pool boy
There's an l.a. Rhythm, the water is flowin'
Heat wave, heat wave, livin' in an oven
To hot to move, to hot for love, man
We're gonna break free, we're gonna bust out
Get me high, get me out
We're gonna break free, we're gonna bust out
Get me high out
Composer: Deap Vally
The lyrics to "Drought" by Deap Vally reflect the oppressive heat and lack of moisture associated with living in a drought-stricken valley. The title itself plays on the double meaning of the word, as both a prolonged period of dry weather and the act of drinking, representing the desperate longing for a reprieve from the unrelenting heat. The repetition of "draught" in the chorus emphasizes the recurring struggle of dealing with the conditions, and how it seems inescapable.
The verses provide insight into the ways in which the characters in the song attempt to cope. The singer's mother urges her not to waste water, while her father encourages her to limit shower time. Meanwhile, the singer's lover wants to spend time with her, yet the heat and exhaustion make it difficult. Despite the oppressive conditions, there is a sense of determination to break free from this cycle and find a way to escape.
The imagery of swimming provides an escape from the heat, as the singer urges her lover to push her into a pool. The desire for relief is palpable, with repeated chants of "get me high, get me out" emphasizing the need to escape and find comfort.
Overall, "Drought" captures the difficulties and frustrations of living in a sweltering, dry environment, while hinting at the possibility of finding relief through the power of escapism.

If them and the dead weather did a tour I'd kill someone if it would get me better seats. I cannot get enough of their sound. That dirty guitar and rhythm and boom on those drums. And their blues like timing. It's such a sexy sound. I'm in love with them as a complete package.
