Over the past year, the girls' live demos and videos have circulated online. Deap Vally officially released their debut single, 'Gonna Make My Own Money', on Ark Recordings on July 30th, 2012. 'Gonna Make My Own Money' received an overwhelming positive response in both the U.S. and the U.K. They played their first London show at the Old Blue Last pub and venue in early July, where several other bands have made their mark. They have also landed spots at music festivals such as Hyde Park with Iggy Pop in London, United Kingdom, Latitude Festival in Henham Park in Suffolk, United Kingdom, and are set to play Reading and Leeds Festival in late August[when?]. Their live shows draw similar comparisons to Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney of The Black Keys, as well as guitar blues influences from Jack White.
Deap Vally will close out the 2012 year with a debut performance in Japan in November, where they will share the stage with the likes of Thurston Moore and Dinosaur Jr., among others.
Deap Vally's debut album will be released under Island Records / Communion in 2013.
Gonnawanna
Deap Vally Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Do what I wanna
I'm gonna
Do it 'cause I wanna
I'm gonna
Do what I wanna
I'm gonna
Do it 'cause I wanna
Drowning under magazines
And politics and get-rich schemes
And Tindering to beat the rest
And making sure my profile's best
Maybe it's the latest trends
Or looking at the lives of friends
Or bumming on a lack of likes
Or maybe I don't give a fuck
The sand, the sea, the salt, the surf
Is telling me, that it's all worth it,
It's all worth it, it's all worth it
Baby, I weren't put on earth
To just obey your every word
I am going out to play
And you don't really have no say
I'm gonna
Do what I wanna
I'm gonna
Do it 'cause I wanna
I'm gonna
Do what I wanna
I'm gonna
Do it 'cause I wanna
Why you try to boss me 'round
Mess me up and bring me down
You think you know what's good for me
Like I don't have my own instincts
You can bully, you can bark
You can circle like a shark
But you're just wasting energy
'Cause, honey, you can't outswim me
Come on, shake it
Let's get loose
You're too uptight like a noose
'Cause I'm doing things the way I want
I work hard but sleep a lot
Let's live our lives and live 'em big
'Cause we only got one life to live
I'm on a psychic safari
And I'm not sorry
I'm on a psychic safari
And I'm not sorry
I'm on a psychic safari
I'm really not sorry
I'm on a psychic safari
I'm sorry I'm not sorry
I'm gonna
Do what I wanna
I'm gonna
Do it 'cause I wanna
I'm gonna
Do it where I wanna
I'm gonna
Do whatever the fuck I wanna
The lyrics to Deap Vally's "Gonnawanna" are centered around the idea of individual freedom and rebelling against societal pressure to conform to certain standards. The opening lines, "I'm gonna do what I wanna, do it 'cause I want to," sets the tone for the rest of the song, declaring a sense of independence and self-determination. The song goes on to criticize the overwhelming influence of media, politics, and social media on our lives, leading to a sense of overstimulation and consequent confusion about one's own desires and needs.
The chorus is a defiant declaration of intent to live life on one's own terms - "I'm gonna do what I wanna, do it where I wanna, do whatever the f*ck I wanna." Here, the lyrics are encouraging the listener to reject external expectations and embrace individuality. The second verse embodies the theme of rebellion against conformity, with the lines "Why you try to boss me 'round, mess me up and bring me down? You think you know what's good for me, like I don't have my own instincts." This emphasis on trusting one's own intuition and rejecting external pressures is a recurring theme throughout the song.
The bridge section adds an interesting twist to the overall message of the song. The line "I'm on a psychic safari, and I'm not sorry" suggests that the journey towards individuality and self-discovery is not a seamless one, but can be a chaotic and overwhelming one at times. By stating that "I'm not sorry," the lyrics suggest that the challenges and difficulties faced during this journey are worth it because they lead to a greater sense of self-awareness and self-determination.
Overall, the song is a celebration of the complexity and unpredictability of the human experience, and an encouragement to embrace individuality and reject societal norms.
