Dance In Perfect Time
Deas Vail Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's a comfortable sound,
The passing cars that calm our bodies down.
In this little town,
We'll fade into summer's new background.
So we'll take this cup tonight,
This chosen life,
We'll dance and dance in perfect time.
Our hiding dreams
Are silhouettes that take us in our sleep.
So if what we have is real,
How should this feel?
Just dance and dance.

Tell me, tell me, can you tell me
That the page will turn itself
And take us somewhere else?

Tell me, tell me, can you tell me
That the page will turn itself
And take us somewhere else?

Tell me, tell me, can you tell me
That the page will turn itself
And take us somewhere else?

Tell me, tell me, can you tell me
That the page will turn itself
And take us somewhere else?

It's a turning key.
When two are one, they set each other free.

Overall Meaning

Deas Vail's song "Dance In Perfect Time" is a poetic expression of the simple joys of life, love, and relationships. The opening lines are an ode to the calming effect of passing cars on the body and mind. It's interesting to note the contrast between the bustling and noisy world outside and the tranquil setting of the little town that "fades into summer's new background." The lyrics suggest a desire to take a pause, appreciate the moment, and live life at a comfortable pace. The line "this chosen life" encourages us to be intentional about our choices and actions.

The second stanza is about dreams and reality. Our dreams are usually hidden, elusive, and ethereal like silhouettes that come alive in our sleep. In contrast, reality is tangible, often imperfect and unsettling. The question posed by the lyrics is, how do we navigate the gap between what we imagine and what is real? The answer, according to the song, is to dance and dance. Dancing, in this context, represents a way of surrendering to the present moment, letting go of our fears and doubts, and connecting with the people we love.

The chorus is hauntingly beautiful and repetitive, with the question "can you tell me that the page will turn itself and take us somewhere else?" It's like a plea to the unknown, to fate or destiny, to guide us through the twists and turns of life, and lead us to where we're meant to be. The ending line, "when two are one, they set each other free," is a profound statement about the power of unity and love. When we form deep connections with someone, we reach a level of intimacy that allows us to be our authentic selves, to let go of our inhibitions, and to experience true freedom.

I just had surgery and it was one of my first shows back. Although it was a little turnout, it was the most intimate show I've ever been a part of or seen. Which couldn't have gone any better. My Fiancee and I had been waiting for them to come through because Shoreline is our song and Deas Vail blows my mind, ALWAYS! They were the last mono vs stereo band my band played with and the sweetest at that.

A humble servant of God. Btw, Deas Vail is not only amazing at writing and musicianship but they are such nice people. I played a show with them and News From Verona in a lil hole in the wall venue in Indianapolis.
