Let nothing you dismay
Remember Christ our Savior
Was born on Christmas day
To save us all from Satan's power
When we were gone astray
Oh tidings of comfort and joy,
Comfort and joy!
From God our Heavenly Father
A blessed angel came
And unto certain shepherds
Brought tidings of the same
How that in Bethlehem was born
The Son of God by name
Oh tidings of comfort and joy,
Comfort and joy!
Oh tidings of comfort and joy!
Mm oh
Mm oh
Mm oh
And when they came to Bethlehem
Where our dear Savior lay,
They found Him in a manger,
Where oxen feed on hay;
His Mother Mary kneeling down,
Unto the Lord did pray.
Oh tidings of comfort and joy,
Comfort and joy!
Oh tidings of comfort and joy!
Now to the Lord sing praises,
All you within this place,
And with true love and brotherhood
Each other now embrace;
This holy tide of Christmastime
All others doth deface.
Oh tidings of comfort and joy,
Comfort and joy!
Oh tidings of comfort and joy!
The lyrics to Deas Vail's version of "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" serve as a reminder of the true meaning of Christmas. The song reflects on the birth of Jesus and His mission to save mankind from Satan's power. The opening verse encourages the listener to not be discouraged but instead to remember the hope that was brought into the world through Christ's birth. The second verse talks about how an angel delivered the news of Jesus' birth to shepherds and how His birth fulfilled the prophecy of the coming of the Messiah.
The third verse shares the intimate scene of Mary and Joseph at the manger with baby Jesus. Mary is described as kneeling and praying, likely giving thanks for the miracle she has been given. The final verse brings the message full circle, as the listener is called to join in a celebration of love and brotherhood during this holy time of Christmas. The "tidings of comfort and joy" that are repeated throughout the song serve as a reminder that Christmas is about more than just presents and decorations, but rather a time to celebrate the hope, love, and peace that Jesus brings.
