With our coinciding pains
Would you calm down please?
And though you say its not the case
We're full of irony and space
And you know it
But oh youve known it all along
Is tossed about in plastic hands
Dont you feel that?
And though we're out here on our own
We're a thousand miles from home
We could make it, and we could take this in our hands
We could fall between these lines if you would work with me
I could pull you from this cellar, we could break these chains together
And you'll become just what you were always meant to be
From this darkness we're escaping
As we're climbing from the belly of the sea
And all these battle lines were placed
Though their meaning's been erased
Into silence
And so we stayed and stood our ground
Though they were nowhere to be found
We were so afraid
But we just stood on anyway
And we could fall between these lines if you would work with me
I could pull you from this cellar, we could break these chains together
And you'll become just what you were always meant to be
From this darkness we're escaping
As we're climbing from the belly of the sea
Dont you wait
You know that you were made for this
Dont you wait
You know that you were made for this
We could fall between these lines if you would work with me
I could pull you from this cellar, we could break these chains together
And you'll become just what you were always meant to be
From this darkness we're escaping
As we're climbing from the belly of the sea
The song "Life In These Little Boats" by Deas Vail talks about navigating life's challenges with a loved one. The first stanza describes a state of disorder as the couple goes about their lives together, facing pain and anxiety. The singer pleads with his partner to calm down, even though they both know they are full of "irony and space" - possibly implying that they are both complex and often contradictory individuals.
In the second stanza, the singer acknowledges that their plans are constantly changing, but suggests that they could take control of their lives by working together. He talks about breaking free from chains and escaping darkness, climbing out of the belly of the sea - which could be a metaphor for depression or feeling trapped. The lines "Dont you wait / You know that you were made for this" suggest that they have the strength and resilience to overcome adversity together.
The last stanza shifts to a more triumphant tone, where the couple stands their ground despite the odds stacked against them. The battle lines are now meaningless, and they are no longer afraid to face the obstacles in their path. The final repetition of the chorus emphasizes the idea of teamwork, and the possibility of achieving great things when working together.
Overall, "Life In These Little Boats" is a song about perseverance and mutual support through difficult times. It suggests that no matter how turbulent life may become, we have the capacity to build something meaningful by coming together and working towards a common goal.
