Brothers On A Hotel Bed
Death Cab for Cutie Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You may tire of me as our December sun is setting 'cause I'm not who I used to be
No longer easy on the eyes but these wrinkles masterfully disguise the youthful boy below
Who turned your way and saw something he was not looking for
Both a beginning and an end
But now he lives inside someone he does not recognize when he catches his reflection on accident

On the back of a motorbike with your arms outstretched trying to take flight, leaving everything behind
But even at our swiftest speed we couldn't break from the concrete in the city where we still reside
And I have learned that even landlocked lovers yearn for the sea, like navy men,

'Cause now we say goodnight from our own separate sides like brothers on a hotel bed

Overall Meaning

In "Brothers on a Hotel Bed," Death Cab for Cutie's lead singer Ben Gibbard reflects on the passage of time and the changes it brings to a relationship. He acknowledges that he has aged and lost some of his youthful charm, but notes that his partner still sees something in him. However, the two of them have grown apart to the point where they're like "brothers on a hotel bed", sleeping side by side but not really connecting. The song's powerful lyricism and slow, melancholic melody bring out the emotional weight of this realization.

The opening lines of the song set the stage for the themes that will be explored throughout: "You may tire of me as our December sun is setting 'cause I'm not who I used to be / No longer easy on the eyes but these wrinkles masterfully disguise the youthful boy below". Gibbard acknowledges that he has aged and lost some of his youthful charm, but notes that his partner still sees something in him that he can't see in himself anymore. This sense of disconnection is compounded by the refrain: "But now he lives inside someone he does not recognize when he catches his reflection on accident". The singer is aware that he has changed, but isn't sure who he has become.

The second verse describes a failed attempt to leave behind the routine and mundanity of daily life: "On the back of a motorbike with your arms outstretched trying to take flight, leaving everything behind / But even at our swiftest speed we couldn't break from the concrete in the city where we still reside". It is a nod to the longing for escape and adventure that many couples experience, but it also highlights the limitations of the world they live in. The song ends with the bittersweet image of two people who have grown apart, but who still share a deep connection, saying goodnight "like brothers on a hotel bed".

This song puts me in a very specific place; I'm probably about 12. I'm sitting in front of my TV, playing Final Fantasy X while my mom cleans up our apartment. It's a Sunday. Pretty sunny, but nothing special. I probably won't go outside. My little brother shoots me with a Nerf gun. We watch Lord of the Rings the next morning. And the next morning.

That's literally it. It's one of the happiest, most joyful memories I can go back to.

"And I have learned that even landlocked lovers yearn
For the sea like, navy men" must be the best line ever written... So real and heartbreaking

Lovers or Lubbers? Honest question

A friend put me onto this band last week, can't get enough of them now. Don't believe they have been around for 20 years. This song is one of my faves. His vocals are so vulnerable.

You should check out Ben Gibbards Tiny Desk live performances on the NPR channel. Really good.

The vocals are great but I really appreciate the first minute and half. The piano chords and nightmare machine followed by the drum beat and guitar is the peak of chill music
