Some Boys
Death Cab for Cutie Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Some boys are filling, some boys are filling the hole
They're making the killing at the top of the billings
Their role, and that's all that they know
But some boys don't listen, some boys don't listen at all
They don't ask for permission, they lack inhibitions
No walls, and they get what they want

But some boys don't know how to love

Some boys are singing, some boys are singing the blues
Joylessly flinging with the girls that they're bringing to their rooms
And then leave them, they're through
Some boys are sleeping, some boys are sleeping alone
'Cause there's no one that's keeping them warm through the evening
They know that they're on their own

'Cause some boys don't know how to love

Some boys are filling, some boys are filling the hole
Some boys are sleeping, some boys are sleeping alone

Some boys don't know how to love
No, some boys don't know how to love
No, some boys don't know how to love
No, some boys don't know how to love

They won't get what they want

Overall Meaning

The song "Some Boys" by Death Cab for Cutie discusses the differences between different types of boys and their approaches to relationships. Some boys are "filling the hole" with meaningless sexual encounters and using their charm and power to get what they want. They are making a "killing at the top of the billings," meaning that they are successful in their conquests and are seen as desirable by others. These boys seem to have a one-track mind and only know how to play this particular role. On the other hand, some boys are not following this path; they are more independent and less concerned with the opinions of others. They don't ask for permission, and they lack inhibitions. They get what they want, but they don't seem to know how to truly love someone.

The chorus repeats the sentiment that some boys don't know how to love. They may be singing the blues or sleeping alone, and they may be successful in their conquests, but ultimately they are missing something essential. The song seems to suggest that these boys are lost and unable to find true love and fulfillment in their lives. The last line of the song is "They won't get what they want," which could be interpreted as a warning or a confirmation that their behavior will not lead to happiness in the long run.

When one gets tired of todays music that sound like too many different sounds mashed together, DCFC is like a gentle hungover cure.

This comment is 6 years old when this album was around 2 years old. "Today's music" so much bigger that the implied definition.

Another amazing DCFC album. WOW! My favorite tracks are “Codes and Keys”, “Unobstructed Views”, “Portable Television”, and “Stay Young, Go Dancing” the video is sweet & melon collie. Ben Gibbard the frontman, his vocals are effortless. The last 6 DCFC album playlist I listened to Ben is pure perfection. There’s a hint of sadness in his vocals on the track of “The Ice Is Getting Thinner” off the Narrow Stairs album, ohhhh it brings tears to my eyes. 😢😢😢It’s so sad.
Codes and Keys gets 👏👏 5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
