We Looked Like Giants
Death Cab for Cutie Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

God bless the daylight, the sugary smell of springtime
Remembering when you were mine in a still suburban town

When every Thursday, I'd brave those mountain passes
And you'd skip your early classes and we'd learn how our bodies worked

God damn the black night, with all its foul temptations
I've become what I always hated when I was with you then

We looked like giants in the back of my grey subcompact
Fumbling to make contact as the others slept inside
And together there in a shroud of frost, the mountain air
Began to pass through every pane of weathered glass
And I held you closer than anyone would ever get

Do you remember the J-A-M-C and reading aloud from magazines
I don't know about you but I swear on my name they could smell it on me
I've never been to good with secrets, no

Oh, together there in a shroud of frost, the mountain air

Began to pass through every pane of weathered glass
And I held you closer

Overall Meaning

We Looked Like Giants is a song by Death Cab for Cutie that tells the story of a couple's past relationship. The opening lyrics express a longing for the past, wishing for the return of a time when everything was brighter and sweeter. The reference to springtime suggests a sense of renewal and growth, while "when you were mine" indicates the loss and regret that comes with a breakup. The setting of a "still suburban town" suggests a place where time seems to stand still, which may have contributed to the couple's eventual breakup.

The second verse describes a routine that the couple once had, where they would meet up every Thursday regardless of the obstacles in their way. The line "we'd learn how our bodies worked" suggests a playful exploration of each other, which may be seen as a metaphor for the intimacy that they shared. The chorus of the song contrasts the imagery of their past relationship as giants, appearing larger than life in the back of a car, with the reality of their situation - fumbling to make contact in the darkness while others were sleeping.

The final verse recalls a specific experience of the couple listening to music and reading magazines together, but with a sense of melancholy as the lyrics reveal that the singer has a secret that they cannot keep from their partner. The song ends with a repeated chorus, emphasizing the memory of the couple's past and the power of their emotions.

God bless the daylight
The sugary smell of springtime
Remembering when you were mine
In a still suburban town

When every Thursday
I'd brave those mountain passes
And you'd skip your early classes
And we'd learn how our bodies worked

God damn the black night
With all its foul temptations
I've become what I always hated
When I was with you then

We looked like giants
In the back of my gray subcompact
Fumbling to make contact
As the others slept inside
And together there
In a shroud of frost
The mountain air
Began to pass
Through every pane of weathered glass
And I held you closer than anyone would ever guess

Do you remember the J.A.M.C.
And reading aloud from magazines?
I don't know about you, but I swear on my name they could smell it on me
But I've never been too good with secrets... ohh...

Oh, together there
In a shroud of frost
The mountain air
Began to pass
Through every pane of weathered glass
And I held you closer...

God bless the daylight, the sugary smell of springtime
Remembering when you were mine
In a still suburban town

When every thursday I'd brave those mountain passes
And you'd skip your early classes
And we'd learn how our bodies worked.

God damn the black night with all it's foul temptation
I become what I always hated
When I was with you then

We looked like giants in the back of my grey subcompact
Fumbling to make contact
As the others slept inside

And together there
In a shroud of frost, the mountain air
Began to pass from every pane of weathered glass
And I held you closer than anyone would ever get

Do you remember the JAMC?
And reading aloud from magazines
I don't know about you but I swear on my name they could smell it on me
I've never been too good with secrets.
No...

And together there
In a shroud of frost and mountain air
Began to pass through every pane of weathered glass
And I held you closer...

11 years ago I would listen to this album every day.. Dcfc's music got me through bad times. Transatlanticism is not only a masterpiece, it's a blessing.

this song i always liked back in the day. Now, at 32, it evokes emotions and memories of lost loves and memories...Nostaligic pain.

I know man. I used to know one red head country girl Back in 2013. I was a shy 19 years old guy, quite naiive. I had had My first heart break And i was totally broken. She invited me to her parents cabin And i ended up spening My whole Summer with her. She made me come out of My shell. We have seen each other once after that Summer but we Have grown into different directions. Anyways, she made me appreciate The real emotions. Soon im turning 30

I've always felt that the atmospheric bridge is what really makes this track so wonderful

This comment is 6 years old, but just came home from seeing the 20 year anniversary tour of this album. I was more of a Plans guy because that’s when I got into them heavily. This show tonight made me obsessed, and I listened to the bridge on repeat on the way home. It’s just so heavenly.
