Diving Horses
Death in Vegas Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There's not a night that passes by when you're not on my mind
Take you over like a river running through, running through you
Running through you, running through you, take you over
Let it take you over, let it take you over
Let it take you over, let it take you over
Let it take you over

We may not be where we want to be
We may not be where we want to be
We may not be where we want to be, we may not be

Oooh-oooh... Oooh-oooh... Oooh-oooh...

It's one hundred miles away, the autumn time
It's one hundred miles away, the autumn time
Is one hundred miles away, the autumn leaves

Are one hundred miles away, in the summertime
The summertime, the summertime, the summertime

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Death in Vegas's song Diving Horses have a very melancholic and introspective tone. The opening lines "There's not a night that passes by when you're not on my mind" convey that the singer is preoccupied by someone who is no longer present in their life. They are haunted by memories and are unable to shake off the emotions that come with it. The river metaphor in the line "Take you over like a river running through, running through you" adds to the intensity of these feelings. The singer is overwhelmed by the memories and can't escape them, they are running through them like water through a river.

The chorus "We may not be where we want to be, we may not be where we want to be" is repeated thrice, reinforcing the sense of loss and the feeling of being stuck in an undesirable place or state. It's almost as if the singer is trying to come to terms with the reality of the situation, that they are not where they want to be, but there is no escape from it. The last lines of the chorus "we may not be" could also suggest that the person they are missing is also feeling the same way, they are not together where they want to be.

The bridge, which is simply the repetition of an "Oooh-oooh" vocal, creates a sense of longing and mourning. The last part of the song "It's one hundred miles away, in the summertime" could suggest that the distance between the singer and the person they miss is considerable, but also highlights the role that seasons play in their memories. The autumn leaves, which are mentioned at the beginning, are now "one hundred miles away" as if the singer has moved on from that season or moment in time, while the summertime is still present and alive in their recollections.

This came up in a playlist while I was falling asleep and let me tell you it was an experience. I was half coherent through the whole thing and only fully woke up when it finished because I had to make sure I saved it somewhere. Gonna listen to it again to see what I missed the first time
