Only In My Dreams
Deborah Gibson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Everytime I'm tellin' secrets
I remember how it used to be
And I realized how much I miss you
And I realize how it feels to be free

Now I see I'm up to no good (no, no, no)
And I wanna start again
Can't remember when I felt good, baby
No I can't remember when

No, only in my dreams
As real as it may seem
It was only in my dreams

Couldn't see how much I missed you (now I do)
Couldn't see how much it meant (ah, ah)
Now I see my world come tumbling down (tumbling down my world)
Now I see the road is bent

If I only once could hold you (no, no, no)
And remember how it used to be
If only I could scold you
And forget how it feels to be free

No, only in my dreams
As real as it may seem
It was only in my dreams

No, no, no, no, only in my dreams
As real as it may seem
It was only in my dreams

No, only in my dreams
As real as it may seem
It was only in my dreams

No, no , no, no only in my dreams
As real as it may seem
It was only in my dreams

No, no, no, only in my dreams

As real as it may seem
It was only in my dreams

Overall Meaning

"Only In My Dreams" is a song by Deborah Gibson that was released in 1987 on her debut album, "Out of the Blue." The lyrics are about a person who is reminiscing about a past relationship and how they miss their former partner. The song starts with the singer admitting that when they tell secrets, they remember how things used to be when they were with their ex-partner. They realize how much they miss them and long to feel that sense of freedom that they once had.

As the song progresses, the singer admits that they are up to no good and they want to start again. They can't remember when they last felt content, and they wish they could hold their ex-partner again. The chorus repeats the idea that the memories of their past love and happiness can only exist in their dreams.

But toward the end of the song, the singer acknowledges that their world is tumbling down and the road ahead of them is bent. They recognize that they should have appreciated the love they once had, and now they can only cling to the memories that exist only in their dreams.

Overall, the song is a reflection on a lost love and the way the past can seem idealized in our memories. We may long for what we once had, but time and circumstance make it impossible to recreate those moments. "Only In My Dreams" captures the bittersweet feelings of nostalgia and the fear that our dreams may be the only place where we can relive our happiest moments.

You know what though? I also am an '80s kid, and I lived through the whole decade and I wish I could go back too. But, if I went back to the '80s, and lived there forever...a) I would get bored with the repetitiveness at some point, and b) I would NEVER re-live all the great stuff that the '90s (and a little bit beyond them) brought.

Yes, the '80s were great, as well as the '50s, and '60s, and '70s, and '90s, each for their own reasons. What was good about them, was the EVOLUTION from one to another. The '80s were fun, but would you really expect them to last forever, in all eternity? They had to end at some point, because everything ends at some point. But not entirely. We have our memories (and You Tube, of course! :p) that will keep them alive for as long as we live.

And besides that, to what SPECIFIC year of the '80s would you like to go, and get stuck there and never leave? 1987, the year this song came out? So you would never listen to Madonna's "Like A Prayer" (and I mean the whole album!) which came out in 1989, huh? Or, you would never witness the evolution of the second (possibly) greatest female pop star of all times, Kylie Minogue. And ALL the other great songs that came out in 1988 and 1989. Or, to go even further, all the COUNTLESS great stuff that came out in the early '90s, at least.

I know what you mean man, I feel you, I would like to be able to go back too. But maybe once every year for a week, and go to a few parties and all that, and then come back to today. Not STAY there forever. The world didn't end in 1989.

p.s.: An 90 year old guy cuts in the conversation:
"Screw the '80s, they sucked, I wanna go back to the '50s to see Elvis again and stay there forever! The '50s were the best times, so pure and innocent and we had a great time!"
😆

for one moment of time, the year this came out and then Paula Abdul came along and then the 90's came and these all faded into oblivion and then people like Courtney came along and then times changes again and so on and the one that remains is MADONNA.

@Dreamcatcher9000
