Two Times Blue
Deborah Harry Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When you tell me that I'm a double timer
Well to me this doesn't add up
You can call me Miss Calculation
But I can't give up
I love you through and through

Well maybe I could've been better
Yeah, maybe I've been kind of bad
But I know, oh yes I know
You'll be two times blue if I go
I know, oh yes I know
You'll be two times blue if I go

So can you tell me, how do you measure
How the bittersweet takes over your mouth
And when the taste is too hard to swallow
Well that's what the sugar's all about

So how can we get back to basics
Before I go down for the count
Because I know, oh yes I know

You'll be two times blue if I go
I know, oh yes I know
You'll be two times blue if I go

You break it, you buy it
You kiss it, you keep it
First you try it, then you leave it
You break it, you buy it
You kiss it, you need it
First you try it, then you need it

I know, oh yes I know
You'll be two times blue if I go
I know, oh yes I know
You'll be two times blue if I go
I know, oh yes I know
You'll be two times blue if I go
I know, oh yes I know

You'll be two times blue if I go
You'll be two times blue

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Deborah Harry's song "Two Times Blue" convey a sense of conflict and uncertainty in a romantic relationship. The first verse seems to address accusations of infidelity or disloyalty from the singer's partner, referred to as a "double timer." Despite these accusations, the singer professes their love and dedication, insisting that they "can't give up." The second verse takes a more introspective turn, with the singer acknowledging their own faults and shortcomings. However, the refrain remains the same: the partner will be devastated if the singer leaves, and the singer seems to be grappling with the decision of whether to stay or go.

The chorus also introduces the metaphor of feeling "two times blue," which could be interpreted as a kind of double sadness or grief. The image of sugar masking a bitter taste could represent a desire to hide or ignore negative feelings, or perhaps an attempt to mitigate or sweeten an unpleasant situation. The repetition of phrases like "You break it, you buy it" and "First you try it, then you need it" could be interpreted in a few different ways. Perhaps they speak to a lack of commitment or investment on the part of the singer, or maybe they're meant to convey a sense of circularity or inevitability in the relationship.
