After their first 1999 self-titled album, their subsequent album L’homme à tue-tête released in May, 2001 gained them media acclaim and public popularity. By the time their 2004 album Des singes et les moutons enhanced their repertoire, they were selling out venues such as La Cigale and touring internationally. Songs from their latest album Les Promesses were featured in their first concert at the oldest music hall in Paris, the Olympia, where they played to a full house on May 16, 2006.
The band acknowledges influences from traditional French and Irish music, rock, klezmer, and many styles that are considered dance hall music, such as gypsy jazz, tango, waltz. Music critics and fans admire their ability to mix these different styles into an exuberant, cohesive whole.
They are known to be friends with bands like La Rue Kétanou or Les Ogres de Barback.

Cette petite question vois-tu, me paraît bien saugrenue,
Cet énorme calembour qu'on appelle l'amour.
The song "Dialogue de sourds" by Debout sur le Zinc is a narrative of a conversation between two young lovers who are discussing the difficulties faced in love. The first verse describes the two lovers enjoying their beautiful life together, but their happiness is clouded by the uncertainty of whether or not their love is genuine. The singer of the song asks their lover when they will know if they truly love them, to which the lover responds by belittling the question as silly and irrelevant.
The second verse delves deeper into the singer's past experiences with love and how they have always been disappointed with the answers they receive. They express their frustration at love being a joke, an "énorme calembour", that constantly evades understanding. They fear that if they ever receive an answer to their question, it will shatter their illusions of love and life.
The final verse is a confrontation between the two lovers. The singer accuses their lover of being despairing and dismissive of their emotions, and suggests that they have been influenced by a depressing movie. The lover replies that if the singer wants to believe in love, they have the right to do so, even if it seems silly to them.
Overall, the song explores the complexities and uncertainties of love, highlighting the communication breakdown that often occurs between people in relationships, and suggests that love may be a futile and illusory concept.

Le langage que tu tiens est désespérant
The language you speak is hopeless
