Say your eyes don't make me cry
Say your lips don't tell me why
I wait for so long
Try as I might
Just a wingless bird in flight
Just a moon without the night
But still glowin' strong
Everybody's got their one thing
I could hang my head in deep shame, baby
But everybody's got their one thing
So I'm givin' in, cuz you just happen to be
Mine, why not mine?
They say everything in time
But hey, why won't it fly
When waiting for love?
It's old, but it's home
I can feel it in my bones
Like a song that won't let go
I know you by heart
Everybody's got their one thing, baby
Everybody's got their one thing
I could hang my head in deep shame, baby
But everybody's got their one thing
So I'm givin' in, cuz you just happen to be
Why, I'm lost and I'm found
Free, but I'm bound
Like a child who still believes
I don't want a cure
I'm shaken, but sure
You will find your way to me
(Chorus)
Mine, why not mine?
They say everything in time
The lyrics of Debra Davis’s song One Thing evoke a sense of longing and acceptance. The singer talks about waiting for love, trying hard but failing, feeling lost and finding oneself again. The lyrics suggest that everyone has their own journey towards finding love, and though it may not always be easy, it is an essential part of the human experience. The title of the song implies that everyone has something that is uniquely theirs, their one thing, and despite the difficulties they encounter in life, they should not give up on finding it.
The lyrics suggest that the singer has struggled to find love and has perhaps waited for it for a long time. She tries hard to fly, like a wingless bird, and hopes for the night like a moon without it. Despite her struggles, she still glows strong and knows that she is not alone in her journey. She acknowledges that everyone has their own ‘one thing,’ and that she should not be ashamed of hers. The final lines of the song suggest that the singer has found what she was looking for and has no intention of letting it go. She firmly believes that love will find a way to her.
