Tell Me Why
Declan Galbraith Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In my dream, children sing
A song of love for every boy and girl
The sky is blue and fields are green
And laughter is the language of the world
Then i wake and all i see
Is a world full of people in need

Chorus:
Tell me why(why) does it have to be like this?
Tell me why (why) is there something i have missed?
Tell me why (why) cos i don't understand
When so many need somebody
We don't give a helping hand
Tell me why?

Everyday i ask myself
What will i have to do to be a man?
Do i have to stand and fight
To prove to everybody who i am?
Is that what my life is for
To waste in a world full of war?

Chorus:
Tell me why(why) does it have to be like this?
Tell me why (why) is there something i have missed?
Tell me why (why) cos i don't understand
When so many need somebody
We don't give a helping hand
Tell me why?

Chorus:
(children)tell me why?(declan)tell me why?
(children)tell me why?(declan)tell me why?
(together) just tell me why, why, why?

Chorus:
Tell me why(why) does it have to be like this?
Tell me why (why) is there something i have missed?
Tell me why (why) cos i don't understand
When so many need somebody
We don't give a helping hand
Tell me why?

Chorus:
Tell me why (why, why, does the tiger run)
Tell me why(why why do we shoot the gun)
Tell me why (why, why do we never learn)
Can someone tell us why we let the forest burn?
(why, why do we say we care)
Tell me why(why, why do we stand and stare)
Tell me why(why, why do the dolphins cry)
Can some one tell us why we let the ocean die?
(why, why if we're all the same)
Tell me why(why, why do we pass the blame)
Tell me why (why, why does it never end)

Can some one tell us why we cannot just be friends?
Why,why

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Declan Galbraith's song "Tell Me Why" highlight the artist's concern about the state of the world and the lack of compassion among people. The song begins with Galbraith describing a dream he had about a peaceful world where children sing a song of love for every boy and girl, the sky is blue, the fields are green and laughter is the language of the world. However, when he wakes up, he sees a world full of people in need, and wonders why it has to be this way. The chorus of the song repeats the phrase "Tell me why?" multiple times, asking for answers that Galbraith and many others are unable to find.

Galbraith's lyrics continue to question the state of the world and the role that individuals play in it. He wonders what he needs to do to be a man and if he has to fight to prove his worth. He also laments the world full of war that seems to be wasting his life. The children in the song join in with the chorus as they too ask "Tell me why?" about the things they see in the world. The song concludes with a series of questions about the state of the environment, our treatment of animals, and our inability to find common ground and be friends, ending with the repeated phrase "Why, why?"

Overall, the song "Tell Me Why" is a call to action, pleading with listeners to open their eyes and see the world around them. The lyrics highlight the need for compassion, empathy, and understanding to make the world a better place.

@trottester

We used to listen to this song in class and learn its lyrics while learning English as a third language in schools. Today, 15 years passed and I happen ti remember it while telling my husband why why... I pray Allah will help all the children in the world and especially in Palestine's Gaza rn. They are suffering more than even. The occupation is doing its best to erase them and their history while everyone is watching.
