In 1996, Breakfast at Tiffany's, which referenced the classic Audrey Hepburn film of the same name, reached the top five in the U.S. and number one in the United Kingdom.
There was conjecture that the band took so much time off between Home and Deep Blue Something in order to fight US centered copyright issues related to their initial album, 11th Song, which they believed to be of lower quality than their name deserved. The 7 year hiatus between albums is believed to be partially responsible for their failure to succeed in the US with their self-titled release.
The band returned in 2015 to release new music for the first time since 2001. This EP was titled Locust House.
John Kirtland is now running a successful independent record label called Kirtland Records. Based out of Dallas, Texas and Los Angeles, California, Kirtland's shrewd business dealings led to his ownership of the back-catalog of superstar band, Bush and royalty rights on the sales of certain albums by No Doubt. After selling off his rights to the No Doubt material, Bush remains on the Kirtland label along with successful indies like Bril and the Burden Brothers.
What A Single Word Can Do
Deep Blue Something Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
To bring out all the flowers in you
Needing hope and joy today
Holding on but you embrace
Swirling in two and by due
What a single word can do
To bleed all the life out of you
Leading hope and joy astray
Blighting every flower that grew
And we wait to hear the news about you
Girl, we hope and pray that you'll pull through
What a single girl can say
To brighten up a dreary day
Lighting all the clothes on fire
I lay on a funeral pyre
What else can I do?
And we wait to hear the news about you
Girl, we hope and pray that you'll pull through
The song "What A Single Word Can Do" by Deep Blue Something is a poignant representation of the power of words and their effects on someone's life. The lyrics talk about how a single word can either bring happiness or sadness into a person's life. The first stanza talks about the beauty that can be brought out by a single word, and how it can provide hope and joy to an individual. It also talks about the emotions people tend to hold onto, despite the pain, and how they accept it.
The second part of the song talks about the opposite effect of a single word. It can cause a person to lose everything and feel like they are bleeding out slowly. The songwriters have expressed how a woman's single word can impact a day by brightening it up, and conversely, a single word can also ignite the sadness and despair in oneself. The ending stanzas also speak about the waiting for the news about a dear friend, mentioned in the earlier stanzas, and hoping that she will recover from whatever she's going through.
Overall, the song is a powerful message about the importance of words and how they have both creative and destructive capacities in our lives.
