Deep Obsession is the only New Zealand group to have three consecutive Number 1 songs from their debut album "Infinity".
Chris Banks and Zara Clark were well supported by their original producer Michael Lloyd who worked at the More FM studio's as a producer for breakfast hosts Kim and Corbett.
The album was almost complete when Vanessa Kelly was invited to join the group in early 1998 as a back-up singer to help with the harmonies when the group was performing live.
In August 1998 "Lost in Love" went to Number #1 on the Official Recorded Music Charts NZ. The Euro-dance cover version of the Air Supply song was a hit among the NZ radio audience.
A number of record companies were interested in Deep Obsession they chose to work with George Ash from Universal Music Group NZ.
The initial success of their first single "Lost in Love", was so sudden that a psychedelic animated story, was bought from Germany and used as the video release.
This was the first move by the Universal Music NZ. However it was not approved to use for any longer than a year and is no longer available to view. (No-one can find a copy of that video.)
Deep Obsession finished recording their debut album "Infinity" in Australia with Steve Peach and Paul Goodyear in 1999. At a total cost of NZ$50,000.
At home in New Zealand the public thought Deep Obsession were European, this improved the overall enigmatic appeal of the group.
They released the second song "Cold" written by Zara Clark and Chris Banks.
But there was a problem with the first video for "Cold" see YouTube - (glad wrap video/big fluffy hats). It should never have seen the light of day, but behold the internet you can have a giggle.
The first video was so bad Deep Obsession could not release it and as they felt it would affect the songs chart placement detrimentally.
They went about making a second video. A friend of the group called in a favour from film producer Rongotai Lomas. He filmed the actual release party for the single "Cold", held at a night club in Auckland.
The girls took charge of their own image with the help of [[John @ DJ Station]] (on K'Rd) it was Sexy Space Clubber image.
Rongotai Lomas worked a creative genius miracle when he produced the amazing montage of visual excitement and hype from the official video release party. That week "Cold" climbed to the Number #1 spot on the Official Recorded Music Charts when that video was released.
Co-founder, Producer, key songwriting partner Chris Banks left Deep Obsession before the third single "One and Only" was released and reached Number #1 on the charts.
As a marketing move Grant Kearney wanted to promote both the girls, and not mention that the majority of vocals (lead and backing) were done by Zara Clark.
Chris was offered a Music Producer role at Universal Music and a six figure publishing deal.
Chris Banks and Michael Lloyd took More FM support with them when they left the group and Grant Kearney aka Sample G assumed the management and music producer role for Deep Obsession.
Grant really pushed hard to get continued radio support for Deep Obsession. The next single "One and "Only" was without Chris involved and no-one knew what would happen. It hit Number #1 on the Charts.
Next release was "You Got The Feeling" charted in the Top 20.
"I Surrender" written by Zara Clark and Chris Banks was the last song from the "Infinity" album to be released as a single although it never had a video. Therefore had no chance at charting well.
Universal Music Group International remixed the "Infinity" album with some of the worlds biggest producer's in the UK at a cost of $500,000. Its available on i-tunes, at discogs, and at amazon.
Video producers insisted Vanessa Kelly mime over Zara Clark's voice.
Zara had recorded all the lead vocals except for one song and had also recorded the majority of the harmonies and backing vocals. An inability to establish who was actually singing began to surface. Vanessa's involvement was shown to be much more than it what it actually was.
Universal Music NZ offered Vanessa Kelly a solo recording deal. Vanessa Kelly-Brown sings the song "Powers in You" from the "Infinity" album. It was not released as a single.
Deep Obsession, Zara was released from the record contract with Universal Music NZ in 2001. Universal Music NZ agreed to write off the NZ$500,000 investment they had made in the group.
2001 along came Charlie aka Sharleen Lawson, she was involved in the third incarnation of Deep Obsession. She was able to step into Vanessa's role as back up singer effortlessly.
Zara with the Deep Obsession brand, still had a publishing contract with Universal Publishing Australia, to produce another album. Deep Obsession had live performances and other commitments.
Zara recorded another song for the Deep Obsession brand called "Miracles". It was recorded at Revolver Studios in Royal Oak. Charlie added some BV's and Anthony Grey played a piano solo over Malcolm Smith's production.
Zara took the song to a friend at the ZM Radio Network in Auckland NZ. With astounding results
[["Miracles']] was added to the ZM Radio Networks play list straight away, and then subsequently picked up by the rival stations More FM, Classic Hits, The Edge etc...
"Miracles" climbed to #34 on the Official Recorded Music Charts NZ in 2001. The video was nominated in 2001 for Best Video at the [[VMANZ]]. see YouTube
"I Am'' another song recorded by [[Deep Obsession]] with [[Kantuta]] was done for fun in 2004. see You Tube.
Zara and Deep Obsession are signed to Universal Publishing Australia.
One And Only
Deep Obsession Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
You are the only one I need
You are the one that makes me happy
You are the only one I need
When the night falls and heaven comes to earth
Then all my worries suddenly return
There's no one else for me
You won't be alone when I get to you
I shouldn't walk away when there's so much to say
Oh baby understand my one and only
When I'm alone it's you who comes to mind
When everything falls apart
You're always right behind
My one and only
There's no one else for me
Yes you are the one...
One... you are the one...
You are the one the one and only
One... yes you are the one
You are the only one I need
One... you are the one...
You are the one that makes me happy...
The lyrics of the song One and Only by Deep Obsession express a deep love and devotion towards a single person, who is referred to as the one and only. The singer unequivocally states that this person is the only one they need and the one that makes them happy. The chorus is repeated with slight variations, emphasizing the importance of this one person in the singer's life.
The second verse conveys a sense of longing and longing for the one and only, especially when the night falls and everything else seems to fade away. The singer regrets not having made things clear earlier and vows that the one and only person will never be alone when they are together.
The overall message of the song seems to be that the one and only is the ultimate source of happiness and completeness for the singer, and they will do everything in their power to ensure that this person remains in their life.

The original version of this song was better. Chris Banks (their producer) was great - he really gave Deep Obsession's music a personality of its own.
