Deep Purple have had several line-up changes and were broken up for eight years from 1976 to 1984, with drummer Ian Paice being the band's only constant member. The first four line-ups, which constituted the band's original 1968–1976 run, are officially indicated as Mark I (1968–1969), Mark II (1969–1973), Mark III (1973–1975) and Mark IV (1975–1976). Mark I comprised the founding members of Deep Purple, Ritchie Blackmore (guitar), Rod Evans (vocals), Jon Lord (keyboards), Paice (drums) and Nick Simper (bass), while Mark II was the most commercially successful line-up, with Ian Gillan and Roger Glover replacing Evans and Simper respectively. Mark III saw David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes replace Gillan and Glover respectively, while Mark IV featured Tommy Bolin replacing Blackmore. The band split in July 1976 and Bolin died from a drug overdose five months later. In 1984, Deep Purple reformed with the Mark II line-up, which remained in place until Joe Lynn Turner replaced Gillan in 1989. Gillan rejoined in 1992, with Blackmore leaving for the second and final time the following year. He was replaced temporarily by Joe Satriani and then permanently by Steve Morse. In 2002 Don Airey replaced Jon Lord, which saw Deep Purple settle into its longest running line-up, unchanged for the next twenty years, until Morse announced his departure from the band in 2022. His place was taken by Simon McBride. Paice, Glover, Gillan, Airey and McBride comprise the current line-up of Deep Purple.
Deep Purple were ranked number 22 on VH1's Greatest Artists of Hard Rock programme] and a poll on radio station Planet Rock ranked them 5th among the "most influential bands ever". The band received the Legend Award at the 2008 World Music Awards. Deep Purple (specifically Blackmore, Lord, Paice, Gillan, Glover, Coverdale, Evans, and Hughes) were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016.

I'm not expecting people, anymore
Hear me grieving, lying on the floor
Whether I'm drunk or dead, I really ain't too sure
I'm a blind man
I'm a blind man
And my world is pale
Lord, you know
There ain't a sadder tale
Had a friend once, in a room
Had a good time, but it ended much too soon
In a cold month, in that room
Found a reason, for the things we had to do
I'm a blind man
I'm a blind man
Now my room is cold
When a blind man cries
Lord, you know
He feels it from his soul
Deep Purple's When A Blind Man Cries is a powerful and heart-wrenching song that touches upon the theme of loneliness and the struggles of a blind man in the world. The song begins with the lyrics "If you're leaving close the door, I'm not expecting people anymore" indicating the isolation and detachment from the world that the singer feels. He is grieving and lying on the floor, unsure if he is drunk or dead. This sense of confusion and helplessness is further amplified in the chorus with the lyrics "I'm a blind man, I'm a blind man and my world is pale. When a blind man cries, Lord, you know there ain't no sadder tale" giving the listeners a glimpse into the struggles of the blind man and his despondent state.
The second verse talks about a friend he once had who he spent time with in a room. They had a good time, but it ended too soon. In a cold month, they found a reason for the things they had to do. The lyrics portray a sense of loss and regret about things that could have been done differently. The singer refers to himself again as a blind man, indicating that despite the presence of his friend, he still lives in a world that is cold and dull. The chorus repeats itself, highlighting the sadness and despair that the singer feels.
Overall, the song delves into the struggles of a blind man and the loneliness and detachment he feels from the world, leaving the listeners feeling a deep sense of empathy towards the singer.

Lyrics:
I see reflections in the water
Autumn colours, summer's daughter
And as as the year is growing older
I see winter on my shoulder
I stand in the haze
Watching stormy ripples grow on my own
Never knew your needed
Till I found myself standing here alone
And in the water, such a sad face
Slowly drowning, such a sad face
If only I could change the seasons
Like a poet, I've my reasons
It started to snow in the middle of July
Wonder why
Never did understand you
My sorrow is hanging in the grey sky
In the summer days we flew to the sun
On melting wings
But the seasons changed to fast
Leave us all behind
Blind
But then the stone fell on the water
Putting end to summer's daughter
And me, I turn away remembering
All the seasons, such a sad thing
It started to rain in the middle of the sun
Winter's begun
Never did understand you
My sorrow is hanging in the grey sky
In the summer days we flew to the sun
On melting wings
But the seasons changed to fast
Leave us all behind
Blind

Unbelievably beautiful song I believe written by Jon Lord, such great instrumentation using a harpsichord and very poetic lyrics! And strong and powerful vocals by Rod Evans.

Grande Rod Evans. Una voce melodica nella musica Rock. Bellissimo brano e bellissimo album dei Deep Purple

There is something extraordinarily magic about this first period of Deep Purple, but especially because it shows how progressive Deep Purple actually are even in relation to themselves and their work. Just amazing.
