Deep Purple
Deep Purple Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Woo,
Wo-o-oo-wo-wo,
Wo-o-oo-wo-wo,
Wo-o-oo-wo-wo
When the deep purple falls
Over sleepy garden walls
And the stars begin to twinkle in the night
In the mist of a memory
You wander all back to me
Breathing my name with a sigh

In the still of the night
Once again I hold you tight
Tho' you're gone your love lives on when light beams
And as long as my heart will beat
Sweet lover, we'll always meet
Here in my deep purple dreams

When the deep purple falls
Over sleepy garden walls
And the stars begin to twinkle
In the night
In the mist of a memory
You wander all back to me
Breathing my name with a sigh

In the still of the night
Once again I hold you tight
Tho' you're gone your love lives on when moonlight beams
And as long as my heart will beat
Sweet lover, we'll always meet
Here in my deep purple dreams
And as long as my heart will beat
Sweet lover, we'll always meet
Here in my deep purple dreams
Wo-o-oo-wo-wo,

Wo-o-oo-wo-wo,
Wo-o-oo-wo-wo

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Deep Purple's eponymous song are an evocative journey into a world where the color purple reigns supreme, evoking feelings of nostalgia, passion, and longing. The song opens with a serene image of the night sky draped in purple and stars twinkling in the background, creating a dreamy setting. Memories from the past come flooding back, and in the mist of these handpicked memories, the singer's lost love appears once again. The lyrics are simple yet poetic, painting a vivid picture of quiet nights, strong emotions, and love that transcends time and space.

As the song continues, we see the singer holding their lover tight in the still of the night, guided by the light of the moon. They know they might not be physically present, but their love is still alive, and they feel the presence of their significant other in their heart. The chorus is a declaration of undying love and a promise of always meeting in the deep purple dreams, a place where they can be together, even if it's just in their imagination.

In conclusion, Deep Purple's lyrics are beautifully written, capturing the essence of love that defies distance and time. The song's dreamy quality makes it a classic, and its popularity over the years is, in part, due to its universal themes of love, loss and longing.

The song "Smoke On The Water" was released in 1972 and tells the story of an actual event that took place at the Montreux Casino in Switzerland. During a Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention concert, a fire broke out at the casino, and the members of Deep Purple happened to be staying in a hotel nearby. The lyrics describe the chaotic scene and the smoke rising from the fire on the water of Lake Geneva.

Due to its catchy and distinctive guitar riff, "Smoke On The Water" has become one of the most recognizable rock songs of all time and has been covered by numerous artists. The phrase itself has come to symbolize the song and the power of rock music in general.

Deep Purple were planning to record in the Casino, and their crew was due to set up as soon as Zappa's broke down. "to make records with a mobile (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rolling_Stones_Mobile_Studio) ... Zappa and the Mamas // had the best place around ... when it all was over // find another place ... we ended up at the Grand Hotel". Everything in the lyrics is literal!
