Ashamed
Deer Tick Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I am the boy your mother wanted you to meet
But I am broken and torn with heels at my feet
And with your purest light why don't you shine on me
Well I should have been an angel
But I'm too dumb to speak
Now as she gets nearer, the visions get clearer
I'm kneeling, weeping
I will hold her dear
Oh, if your eyes water, you've got your favorite number to spin

And oh, what a crying shame, a crying shame
What we became

Murdered my throat, screaming bloody all night
Hit him with a book and how he crumbles
Oh you should have seen the arches tumble
They're golden no more
Now I'm smiling in my blood

I'm caught in a whirlwind
I'm going to heaven
I'm standing on trial and it's painted on canvas
An eternal testament to how we are so animalistic

And oh, what a crying shame, what a crying shame
What we became

I bow my head in the morning light and say goodnight
I held her hand and I, I kissed her eyes
Stumbled down the stairs and hang my self on high

And I started for the town got to the front yard
And died

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Deer Tick's song "Ashamed" are a mix of regret and despair, exploring the imperfections of human nature and the consequences of our actions. The singer confesses to being broken and torn, unable to live up to the expectations of the person who was supposed to meet. The chorus of the song laments what the characters in the song have become, highlighting the shame and disappointment that they feel towards themselves.

The second verse introduces a violent twist, with the singer describing how he shouted and screamed all night until his throat was murdered. The following lines depict him hitting someone with a book, causing them to fall apart. The arches that once stood tall and golden are now crumbling, representing the loss of innocence and purity. Despite the violence and chaos, the singer seems to find a sense of peace in his own blood, smiling at his own demise.

The last verse of the song is the most introspective, with the singer feeling caught in a whirlwind and standing on trial. The line "it's painted on canvas, an eternal testament to how we are so animalistic" suggests that the singer sees human behavior as raw and primal, devoid of the grace and sophistication that we like to attribute to ourselves. The song ends with the singer bowing his head in the morning light, kissing the eyes of the person he loves, and then proceeding to kill himself.

Overall, "Ashamed" is a dark and brooding song that delves deep into the human psyche, exploring our fears, insecurities, and destructive tendencies. The lyrics are powerful and evocative, compelling the listener to reflect on their own flaws and weaknesses.

¡Excelente!

One of the most brilliant things about the song is how it ends right after the drums and full instrumentation kicks in (and on the "...and died." lyric). I actually laughed the first time I heard it. It's fantastic and subversive, but doesn't undercut the honest emotion of the rest of the song. Love it.

I know but it makes me sad every time it ends

Whoever disliked this song has no soul at all. Period.
