Action
Def Leppard Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

So you think you'll take another piece of me
To satisfy your intellectual need
Do you want, do you want...Action?
Gonna bring you down cause you're pushin' me
You gotta recognize my superiority
Liar, liar
You know you believed it
Liar, liar
'Cause I'm the main man
And that's why
Everybody wants a piece of the action
Everybody needs a main attraction
I got what everybody needs
Satisfaction guaranteed
Everybody wants a piece of the action
I was suicidal cause she was my idol
Baby baby baby bring it to your knees
Well there was a time I would have walked the line
Don't you bring me down with your insatiable greed
Liar, liar
You know you believe me
Liar, liar
Cause I'm the main man
And that's why
Everybody wants a piece of the action
Everybody needs a main attraction
I got what everybody needs
Satisfaction guaranteed
Everybody wants a piece of the action
Do you want
Action! Action!
Everybody wants, everybody needs

Everybody wants, everybody needs
Repeat Bridge and Chorus

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Def Leppard's song Action are an expression of defiance and superiority towards someone who has taken advantage of the singer's vulnerability. The singer challenges their oppressor by questioning if they want action, as if daring them to try to take another piece of the singer. The singer claims their superiority and seeks to bring down the oppressor. The chorus goes on to say that everybody wants a piece of the action, meaning everyone wants to be part of something exciting, unique and daring, something that is owned by this speaker. The singer asserts that he is the main man, the one who has what everybody needs, and he guarantees satisfaction to anyone who joins him.

In the second verse, the singer talks about his love for someone who was his idol, and how it drove him to be suicidal. However, his idol betrayed him and caused him pain. He asks this person not to bring him down with their greedy attitude. The liar liar part of the lyrics could be in reference to the betrayal by this idol, who had promised to love and cherish him. Ultimately, the lyrics portray a sense of strength, both in the face of adversity and in the ability to provide what everyone desires.
