Foolin'
Def Leppard Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Lady luck never smiles
So lend your love to me awhile
Do with me what you will
Break the spell take your fill
On and on we rode the storm
The flame has died and the fire has gone
Oh, this empty bed is a night alone
I realized that long ago

Is anybody out there, anybody there
Does anybody wonder, anybody care

Oh, I just gotta know
If you're really there and you really care
'Cause baby I'm not

F-f-f-foolin', ah f-f-foolin'
F-f-f-foolin', ah f-f-foolin'
Won't you stay with me awhile

Close your eyes don't run and hide
Easy love is no easy ride
Just wakin' up from what we had
Could stop good love from going bad

Is anybody out there, anybody there
Does anybody wonder, anybody care

Oh, I just gotta to know
If you're really there and you really care
'Cause baby I'm not

F-f-f-foolin', ah f-f-foolin'
F-f-f-foolin', ah f-f-foolin'

Oh, I just gotta to know
If you're really there and you really care
'Cause baby I'm not

F-f-f-foolin', ah f-f-foolin'
Not f-f-f-foolin', ah, no

I'm not foolin' myself
Foolin' myself
Not, no, no, (foolin' myself)
I'm not, no (I'm not foolin' myself)

I'm not foolin'
I'm not foolin' myself (no)

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of 'Foolin'' highlights that life isn't always about guaranteed success - Lady Luck isn't always on our side, and we must accept whatever we get. Joe Elliott, the lead vocalist of Def Leppard, then appeals to someone to 'lend your love to me awhile'. In essence, he's asking for someone else's love, even if it's for a short time, to help him ride out the storm of life. He acknowledges that he's willing to go along with whatever they want, including breaking spells or taking his fill. But regardless of how long they ride the storm, he realizes that their relationship has fizzled out, and the fire has gone. There is no one in bed with him; it's a night alone.

In the chorus, Elliott looks for someone, wondering if anyone is out there who cares, someone who is interested, someone who wants to connect with him. He wants to be certain before putting himself out there that the other person is in it for real, that they're not just a fake. It's not easy to show vulnerability, and he doesn't want to be embarrassed. Elliott asks to stay a while with his listener and experience love without hiding or fear. While he emphasizes that love is not easy, he still is willing to take a chance, knowing that if they do not face their problems and work together, the relationship might fall apart.
