Since 1992, the band has consisted of Rick Savage (bass, backing vocals), Joe Elliott (lead vocals), Rick Allen (drums, backing vocals), Phil Collen (guitar, backing vocals), and Vivian Campbell (guitar, backing vocals). They established themselves as part of the new wave of British heavy metal movement of the early 1980s.

The band's greatest commercial success came between the early 1980s and the early 1990s. Their first album, 1980's On Through the Night, reached the Top 15 in the UK but received little notice elsewhere. Their second album, 1981's High 'n' Dry, was produced by Mutt Lange, who helped them begin to define their melodic hard rock style, and the album's most popular track "Bringin' On the Heartbreak" became one of the first rock videos played on MTV in 1982, but the album only reached the Top 30 and 40 in the UK and US. Def Leppard's next studio album, Pyromania, was released in January 1983, with "Photograph" and "Rock of Ages" both topping the US Rock Tracks chart and reaching the top 20 of the Hot 100. Reaching No. 2 on the US album chart, Pyromania was certified Diamond in the US and 7× platinum in Canada and reached the top 20 in the UK but did not sell much elsewhere.

Def Leppard's fourth album, the more pop-oriented Hysteria (1987), topped the UK, US, New Zealand, Canadian, Australian and Norway charts. It also went to No. 2 in Sweden and No. 10 in Germany without any Top 50 singles in those countries. It has been certified 12× platinum for sales in the US and 13× platinum in Canada, selling over 25 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling albums of all time. The album spawned six Top 20 US singles, including the US Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 "Love Bites" (went Top 10 in several other countries including No. 2 in NZ), alongside "Pour Some Sugar on Me" (US No. 2), "Hysteria", "Armageddon It" (No. 2 in NZ), "Animal" (at No. 6, the biggest UK hit), and "Rocket" (a Top 15 hit in many countries). Hysteria had four Top 10 hits in New Zealand.

Their next studio album, Adrenalize (their first following the death of guitarist Steve Clark), reached No. 1 on the UK, US, NZ, Canadian and Australian charts in 1992, while going Top 10 in Sweden and Germany. It contained several hits, including the US Rock Tracks chart-topper, "Let's Get Rocked", which became their biggest hit in several countries, including No. 2 in the UK, No. 3 in Canada and Switzerland, and the Top 20 in Sweden and Germany. The third single, "Have You Ever Needed Someone So Bad", was a Top 15 song in the US, UK and Canada. Adrenalize went on to sell over 8 million copies worldwide. Their 1993 album, Retro Active, contained the acoustic Top 5 North American hit "Two Steps Behind". Their greatest hits album Vault, released in 1995, featured the UK No. 2 hit "When Love & Hate Collide" and reached the Top 10 in several countries, going 5× platinum in the US. Beginning with Slang, Def Leppard released five albums between 1996 and 2008, with most usually reaching the Top 15 in several countries, including the UK, US and Canada. Their self-titled album was released in 2015 and reached the Top 10 in several countries. The band's newest studio album, Diamond Star Halos was released in May 2022 and reached the Top 10 in the US, the UK and Australia.

As one of the world's best-selling music artists, Def Leppard have sold more than 100 million records worldwide, and have two albums with RIAA diamond certification: Pyromania and Hysteria, making them one of only five rock bands with two original studio albums selling more than 10 million copies in the US. The band were ranked No. 31 in VH1's "100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock" and ranked No. 70 in "100 Greatest Artists of All Time". Case in point: Def Leppard is my second favorite band of the 80's! And I'm a BLACK man, raised up on Motown, and a deep fan of classic/vintage R&B and Soul!😮 Again, second only to New Edition, Def Leppard was my FAVORITE 80's group! he is good but sadly battled the bottle. Phil Collen (whom I originally didn't like) ended playing the lead (steves role) in many albums, my respect for him and I mean RESPECT went up immeasurably. All in all, Joe, Steve, Phil and Rick were the heart and soul. sidenote; Rick, joined when he was about 15, ended up losing his arm in a car accident, rehabilitated, and still ended up making iconic music. All of them, awesome and forever eternal Def Leppard.

I did too,it was an INCREDIBLE night! I bursted into tears when that chanting came on. I've always loved older music and I have a connection with it. I remember when this video was a World Premiere on MTV. This was the video off the Hysteria album everyone was waiting for. MTV aired it at 12pm and every two thereafter on a Saturday. Def Leppard of course did not disappoint. (For those who might be young, back then MTV stood for Music Television, and they played music videos all day.)

If antenna TV goes away there will be no curation whatsoever despite the worst censorship that history has ever known. Def Leppard are rock legends. Even some of their later albums were epic with an amazing progression in sound and experimentation.. Hysteria was historic. Rocket is an an unstoppable force. Pretty much perfection in the genre. We would road cruise, listen to this and others, find a bridge out in the country, start a fire by the river, and a ton of high school kids would have our own personal concert. AC/DC was there and many more.... we were rocket gods.

....Uriah Heep in the 70's e.g. "Sunrise" the opening track of the Magician's Birthday album and indeed opening track of the 1973 Uriah Heep Live album.... known for their vocal harmonies and by some labelled as "the Beach Boys of heavy rock" a bit of an exaggeration but could well have also influenced the guys in Leppard along with the incredible Sweet (stuff like "Hell Raiser", "Teenage Rampage" etc is well etched in my brain), T Rex, etc, and of course not forgetting Mr Bowie, all incredible stuff.

I will argue for the rest of my life that Rick Allen is one of the best drummers to live. Whether they’re simple beats or not, doing all those rhythms required for two arms, but he does them with one arm? Dude is impressive as hell and my personally favorite drummer.

Yes, Michael Parkes, I'm here listening with you at the end of May, 2019 to one of the best bands to ever come out of Britain! And that is saying a lot! I don't know how old you are, but thanks to my older sister, I feel like a '60's child who enjoyed the "British Invasion" and spent my formidable years in the '70's enjoying the second "British Invasion" with all the Glam bands and great rock still coming from the British isles. Last night, I rang up Zappo's/Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas where Def Leppard will begin a residency in August and bought a ticket to celebrate my (dare I say?) 62nd birthday! It's a small venue which is ideal for me as I loathe crowds. There is also a possibility for a "meet and greet". I'm trying to patiently await an e-mail regarding that. I've never been to Las Vegas and have never wanted to go. My husband has tried for years to lure me there, but I've just never been interested. I think growing up in New Orleans may have had something to do with that. Anyway, only Def Leppard could get me to go somewhere I've never thought I would go. My husband of 25 years got home last night and I told him that I bought a ticket and would be going. He can only name one of their songs and I imagine you can guess what IT is. We lead relatively separate lives at this point. He did ask if he could join me on the trip. Rather a surprise, but okay. Anyway, I was able to get a stellar seat (not that I'll be in it much) very close to the stage. I've never seen them live before as I don't do well in arenas. All I know is when they play "Rocket", I'll be "on the satellite of love" and probably be thinking of little else. Except, of course, do I have a clear view of one Mr. Rick Allen? Then, all should be right in my world. All of my illnesses and pain will disappear - at least for the night. I realize we don't know one another from beans and I have told you much more than you wanted or needed to know, but we are both Def Leppard admirers (not keen on the word "fan") and I am thrilled to be able to share with someone that I'm going to finally see them live. Peace!

Def Leppard are an English rock band formed in 1977 in Sheffield.
