Right Brigade
Deftones Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You can't disappear anymore
I see your face lurking outside the window
You say you're a trife I'm a bore
You touch yourself put your face in the pillow

But the funny thing about you is
You remembered to leave it behind
And the funny thing about me is
I'm a member of the Right Brigade!

Makes no difference to me
What side you choose
What side will lose
All there is to perceive is what I want
And I know how to get it

But the funny thing about you is
You remembered to leave it behind
And the funny thing about me is
I'm a member of the Right Brigade!

Right Brigade! Ahhh...
Right Brigade! Ahhh...

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Deftones's song Right Brigade are dark and introspective, providing a commentary on themes such as addiction, isolation, and belonging. The opening lines set a haunting tone, as the singer remarks that someone they once knew cannot hide from them anymore. The phrase "lurking outside the window" paints a picture of an uncomfortably close and potentially threatening presence. As the song continues, the singer describes the other person as a "trife" - a derogatory term meaning something like "disreputable," "unworthy," or "slutty" - while also criticizing themselves for being a "bore."

The most striking element of the song, though, is the chorus: "But the funny thing about you is / You remembered to leave it behind / And the funny thing about me is / I'm a member of the Right Brigade!" This could be interpreted in a few different ways, but the most straightforward seems to be that the "you" referenced in the first line is someone who's trying to escape their past, while the "me" in the second line is someone who's clinging to an identity or a group. The "Right Brigade" suggests some kind of political or social affiliation, but it's not entirely clear what that might be.

Overall, the lyrics to Right Brigade are unsettling and thought-provoking, hinting at darker themes and emotions beneath the surface. The way the song combines these lyrics with a heavy, driving beat and a crunching guitar riff makes for an intense listening experience.

I love how deftones was heavily influenced by old school DC hardcore music. This is awesome.

T0pMan15

They’re influenced by all sorts. The Cure, Depeche Mode and The Smiths to name some more. Of course hip hop too

Akbar Mustehsan

One of the best tributes ever done by Deftones. And Chi's bass here rules here! R.I.P Chi.

Akbar Corpsegrinder How do you have a confederate flag but enjoy a tribute to a band made up of black artists?

Akbar Mustehsan

Shred Or Be Dead It's a free country, that's why.

Akbar Corpsegrinder That doesn't explain anything.

... and furthermore, this is a live cover from 1996! It's not like they put it on an album or released it as a single. this cover was never recorded outside of this video. It wasn't even on their B-sides and rarities album which consisted of many covers. This is simply a live homage to possibly the best Hardcore band ever. If I had a band, we would surely be butchering some Bad Brains covers.

I think Chino and crew do this song justice. Deftones are a great band, even if I love Bad Brains more. Haters can shut up

I grew up with Deftones bad brains. I love em both equally. Deftones have some really fucking brilliant music. Adrenaline, around the fur, pony, diamond eyes. This aren't flavor of the week. Those are powerful albums. Even the newest one ohms is still sick.
