DeJ Loaf was born in Detroit, Michigan and raised on the east side of the city in the Fairview Housing projects. Growing up, she would often listen to music with her parents and grandmother, ranging "from 2Pac to Rakim to Miles Davis." Her father was killed when she was aged 4. A self-described "good kid and a decent student" who mostly kept to herself, she began writing her own original music as early as 9 years old. She graduated high school in 2009, played basketball up to the junior varsity level, and later attended Saginaw Valley State University to study nursing for three semesters before deciding to focus on a full-time music career.

I'm not throwin' no shots but I'ma show you my guns
I'ma take my chances, I ain't bitin' my tongue
I'ma scream it to the top of my lungs
If you ain't chasing your dreams what the fuck are you doin'
Tell me how is that fun
Tell me what keeps you goin'
I just wanna know
In Detroit, cold as ever, why the fuck is it snowin'?
That's my city, though, shorty think you cool with that gun
You a son of bitch
You ain't tougher than nothin'
I can never be a benchwarmer
Niggas want beef bitch, fuck it, I'm George Forman
Diamonds dancing, gettin' better at performin'
I be working on my vocals all night, all morning
No snorin', I want it, I warned you, I earned it
Back when they were crackin' joke's and I ain't think shit was funny
Old friends that turned into strangers
Ex lovers mad that I'm famous
They see the picture I painted
I been going through changes
I prayed to God and I made it
Nobody did me no favor
I'm sorry if you can't take it
I been going through changes
Ever since I was young, knew I was the one
Dazed in new wave, I'm just soaking it in
Funny how they said they want it back then
Once I got it, lotta shit started disappearin'
How you carry yourself, how you speak within
Anything negative ain't part of my plan
God chose me and I be God damned
If I let another soul try to wheel me in
If it was meant to be, you'd be right here
New phone, who dis? Ain't heard from you in years
And they could never call me selfish
Gave chances after chances
Mama knows best, mama said they all jealous
And I ain't gon' lie
That shit is scary when the people that you love
Don't wanna see you flaunt
Don't wanna see you eat, they wanna take your porridge
Don't wanna see you different, they wanna see you normal
I just want my bro free, free man like Morgan
I'm blessed and I struggle, you don't know my story
Yeah, and shit, soon, I'll be married
Hope to see you and your children at my wedding, my baby
Old friends that turned into strangers
Ex lovers mad that I'm famous
They see the picture I painted
I been going through changes
I prayed to God and I made it
Nobody did me no favor
I'm sorry if you can't take it
I been going through changes
I been going through changes
I been going through changes
The song "Changes" by Dej Loaf is a reflection on her journey to success, and how her life has changed since then. The lyrics discuss how her old friends couldn't keep up with the changes she was experiencing, and how she was not throwing shots, but showing off her guns. She was ready to take her chances, not biting her tongue or hiding her feelings anymore. The chorus discusses how she is going through changes and how nobody did her any favors. She acknowledges that some people are jealous of her success, but she is not going to let anyone bring her down. Dej Loaf appears to have an inner strength and a fierce determination that's propelling her forward to new heights.
The opening lyrics recognise the people who have faded away as she has achieved more success, but she is not taking any direct shots at these people. Instead, she is focusing on the positive changes she is making in her life. She is chasing her dreams and not letting anything stand in her way, telling her listeners to do the same. Dej Loaf acknowledges that life can be tough, especially in Detroit, but she is not going to let it get her down. This reflects her resilience and strong character.
The second verse of the song is an introspection on Dej Loaf's journey to success. She knows she is the one and is soaking up the new wave that is happening in her life. She is happy about her success, but she acknowledges that there are negatives that come with it. People who used to want to be around her are now nowhere to be found, and the people who are still in her life are not always supportive. Dej Loaf channels her pain into her creativity, making beautiful music that inspires her fans. The song is ultimately an uplifting anthem about growth and change, inspiring listeners to keep pushing forward.
