If I Died
Delaney Jane Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Maybe If I died
And came back to life
You will look at me the way you did before
Before I was yours
Before you were mine
'Cause I don't feel those hungry eyes anymore

And it's hard for me to find the words to say
When I'm afraid that nothing's ever gonna change

Maybe if I died you would finally see
All of me
Every little piece of me
Maybe if I died you would finally see
You miss me
Or maybe you'd be fine

Remember when we met
You were just a friend
But you chased me like I was a piece of heaven
And I warned you first
That I wouldn't be easy to love, no
Everybody tells me I'm too much
But you wouldn't let me go, yeah

It's hard for me to up and walk away
When I know my love for you has never changed

Maybe if I died you would finally see
All of me
Every little piece of me
Maybe if I died you would finally see
You miss me
Or maybe you'd be fine

Kiss me like you mean it
Hold me like you're scared to let me go
You change like the seasons
Show me you're the man I used to know

Maybe if I died you would finally see
All of me
Every little piece of me
Maybe if I died you would finally see
You miss me
Would you miss me?

Maybe if I died you would finally see
All of me
Every little piece of me
Maybe if I died you would finally see
You miss me
Or maybe you'd be fine

Would you miss me?
Maybe you'd be fine

Overall Meaning

Delaney Jane's song "If I Died" is about an individual in a relationship who feels like their significant other no longer looks at them the way they used to. The individual wishes that the only way their partner would be able to truly appreciate them is if they were to tragically die and come back to life. The lyrics showcase the vulnerability of wanting to be seen and appreciated in a relationship, as well as the fear of not ever being able to gain that recognition.

Throughout the song, Delaney Jane reminisces about the beginning stages of the relationship in which her partner was enthralled with everything about her, from her personality to her physical features. As time went on, however, it appears as though her partner lost interest and no longer viewed her in the same light.

The chorus of the song repeats the lyrics "Maybe if I died you would finally see all of me. Every little piece of me." This statement highlights the deep desire to be noticed and appreciated within the relationship because the singer feels as though their partner does not see the entirety of who they are.

One possible interpretation of the lyrics is that the singer is experiencing emotional neglect from their partner. They feel like they are invisible to their partner and that their hopeless desire for their partner's attention has become all-consuming. The song's somber tone showcases the individual's pain and the isolation they feel in the relationship.
