Delays have long been British rock’s best kept secret. A heady concoction of angelic harmonies, beat-group hauteur and groove-based hedonism, they belong to British pop’s most regal bloodline: (early) Floyd, The Smiths, The Stone Roses. Hitch a lift with them to North America, however, and you’ll see their euphoric ballroom blitz send fans into a frenzy. Head south of the border and it’s a full on teenage rampage.
Having signed to Rough Trade in 2004, they released their debut album Faded Seaside Glamour the same year. A riot of page-boy haircuts, nifty riffs and celestial harmonies, it boasted top Twenty hits ‘Long Time Coming’ and ‘Nearer Than Heaven’ and prompted the Guardian to describe them as "First band in a decade to lay serious claim to the Stone Roses Throne"- Follow up You See Colours (2006) saw their psych-pop blueprint delivered with added BPM. A brooding mix of “Voulez Vous’ and ‘The La’s’, it spawned alpha-pop hits ‘Valentine’ "Best comeback single of 2006"-NME and ‘Hideaway’. 2008 saw the release of the third album ' Everything's The Rush' - Epic, skyscraping - Indie-pop has never been so glorious and sweeping "-The Mirror..
Delays returned in 2010 with their eagerly-anticipated 4th album 'Star Tiger Star Ariel'

Stay Where You Are
Delays Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Not treading water today
I've left the spoons in the backroom
It's better ending this way, hey
But don't worry (don't worry)
I'll be there (don't worry)
Unless you try to gain my defences
I'll be there (don't worry)
Unless you walk away
Stay where you are
Stay where you are
Tell everybody I'm leaving
Not treading water today
I've left the spoons in the backroom
It's better ending this way
But don't worry (don't worry)
I'll be there (don't worry)
Unless you try to gain my defences
Don't worry (don't worry)
I'll be there (don't worry)
Unless you walk away
Stay where you are
Stay where you are
But don't worry (don't worry)
I'll be there (don't worry)
Unless you try to gain my defences
Don't worry (don't worry)
I'll be there (don't worry)
Unless you walk away
Stay where you are
Stay where you are
The lyrics of Delays’ song “Stay Where You Are” communicate the message of someone who is leaving and wants their loved ones to stay where they are, possibly to avoid any confrontation or painful goodbyes. The first line conveys this message explicitly, as the singer tells everybody that they are leaving. The line “not treading water today” could imply that the singer is tired of waiting for something to happen, which again reinforces the decision to leave.
The phrase “I’ve left the spoons in the backroom” is more abstract and open to interpretation. It could allude to leaving something behind that was a part of the past, or to losing one’s appetite for something that was consuming them before. The repetition of “don’t worry” and “I’ll be there” can be seen as reassuring the loved ones who are going to be left behind, almost as if saying that the separation is not going to be permanent.
The repetition of “stay where you are” in the chorus is significant, as it reinforces the idea that the singer wants their loved ones to remain in their current situations, and not make any drastic changes or decisions as a result of the departure. Overall, the lyrics of “Stay Where You Are” paint a picture of someone who is leaving, but not necessarily ending all connections, and who is aware of the potential emotional impact of their decision on the people they leave behind.
