Self-Saboteur
Delerium Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

No one wins at this game
Throwing knives in your pain
And even though you're lying down now
You're fighting in a war zone
Between the world and your brain

You hide your pride
Why can't you see
Can't you see, can't you see
You are your own worst enemy

You are what you despise
Blame is only a compromise
Anger is your bow and arrow
It's better than a shield for your sorrow
But nothing's hurting inside

You hide your pride
Why can't you see
Can't you see, can't you see
You are your own worst enemy

All the good things you have
Always end up with someone else
And you blame that they are stealing
All the big plans you made
Will explode and you'll suffocate
From the anger you are feeling

You hide your pride
Why can't you see
Can't you see, can't you see
You are your own worst enemy

You hide your pride
Why can't you see
Can't you see, can't you see
You are your own worst enemy

You hide your pride
You are your own worst enemy

You hide your pride
You are your own worst enemy

Overall Meaning

The song "Self-Saboteur" by Delerium explores the idea of someone being their own worst enemy. The first verse sets the scene of a painful battle between the world and the mind. The use of "throwing knives in your pain" highlights the self-destructive behavior that is causing internal conflict. The second verse goes even further into this idea, claiming that "you are what you despise" and that "blame is only a compromise." The individual is caught in a cycle of anger and blame, using it as a shield for their sorrow. However, despite these actions, nothing is actually hurting inside.

The chorus emphasizes the point that the individual is their own worst enemy. They hide their pride, which prevents them from seeing the truth about themselves. The bridge suggests that the individual is unable to hold onto the good things they have and blame others for taking them away. The lyrics also allude to the individual's tendency to make big plans and then explode when things don't go their way.

Overall, "Self-Saboteur" is a powerful song that speaks to the human experience of self-destructive behavior. The lyrics touch on themes of pain, anger, blame, and pride, highlighting the internal conflict that results from these emotions.

@chocodash

Even with Delerium's new poppy sound, Kristy Thirsk always brings back the feel of Delerium to me. I love her for that so much.

@alant3690

Kristy Thirsk makes this song. So heartfelt and personal. It's too bad she didn't have a better manager.

@Clessandra

Kristy's best track. First time in 6 albums her voice caught my attention. Love Delerium. Wish so much that they would do a DVD or something where we could see them live. A KCRW session would be great, but I'm guessing it would be tough to get ALL THE GREST WOMEN SINGERS TOGETHER. Oh well.

@THEWARRIORSANGEL

@jbw9999

Why wasn't this a single? It's a lot better than the singles they released off this album.

@ekklektikssounds2063

Her voice reminds me Madonna's voice, I don't know why, it seems to be "similar", well I like it ;)

@marcos-ll2yr

True Is very similar , It reminds me of the era of Ray of light

@LesleyHoenig

@@marcos-ll2yr I don't think she sounds anything like Madonna. There is no way I would confuse the two.
