An actress, singer, talk show host, and author, the multi-talented Reese first started singing in church in her hometown of Detroit when she was six years old. By the age of 13, she was touring with gospel great Mahalia Jackson; then, at 18, she formed the Meditation Singers and became the first performer to bring gospel music to the casinos of Las Vegas. Reese expanded her musical repertoire as a vocalist with the Erskine Hawkins Orchestra and began recording albums, with such hits as "Don't You Know" and "And That Reminds Me" in the 1950s. She appeared extensively as a guest on the top television variety series, logging more than 20 appearances in one year on The Ed Sullivan Show on the CBS Television Network. Reese was nominated for a Grammy Award as Best Female Soloist in Gospel Music in 1987.
Tapping into her other skills, she was host of a television talk show in 1969-1970, then began guest-starring in such series as Sanford and Son, The A-Team, Crazy Like a Fox and Picket Fences. She starred in the CBS Network series Charlie & Co. and The Royal Family. Reese's current projects include a new album based on her 27-city tour with her revue, "Some of My Best Friends Are the Blues," as well as song on the Touched By An Angel Soundtrack. Lover Man
Della Reese Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I long to try something I never had
Never had no kissin'
Oh, what I've been missin'
Lover man, oh, where can you be?
The night is cold and I'm so alone
I'd give my soul just to call you my own
But no one to love me
Lover man, oh, where can you be?
I've heard it said
That the thrill of romance
Can be like a heavenly dream
I go to bed with a prayer
That you'll make love to me
Strange as it seems
Someday we'll meet
And you'll dry all my tears
Then whisper sweet
Little things in my ear
Hugging and a-kissing
Oh, what I've been missing
Lover man, oh, where can you be?
The lyrics to Della Reese's song "Lover Man" express the longing and sadness of a woman who has never experienced true romantic love. She yearns for something she has never had - kisses and affection. The woman feels alone and cold, and wishes she had a lover to call her own. She prays for someone to come and fill the void in her life. The song describes the thrill of romance as a "heavenly dream," and the woman's desire for physical and emotional intimacy is palpable.
The lyrics suggest that the woman's lack of experience with love has left her feeling empty and unfulfilled. She dreams of meeting someone who will make her feel complete, who will "dry all my tears" and whisper "sweet little things" in her ear. The song's mournful melody and poignant lyrics evoke a sense of yearning and sorrow that is both intense and relatable. The lyrics capture the universal longing for love and connection that most people experience at some point in their lives.
