By the age of 13, she was touring with gospel great Mahalia Jackson; then, at 18, she formed the Meditation Singers and became the first performer to bring gospel music to the casinos of Las Vegas. Reese expanded her musical repertoire as a vocalist with the Erskine Hawkins Orchestra and began recording albums, with such hits as "Don't You Know" and "And That Reminds Me" in the 1950s. She appeared extensively as a guest on the top television variety series, logging more than 20 appearances in one year on The Ed Sullivan Show on the CBS Television Network. Reese was nominated for a Grammy Award as Best Female Soloist in Gospel Music in 1987.
Tapping into her other skills, she was host of a television talk show in 1969-1970, then began guest-starring in such series as Sanford and Son, The A-Team, Crazy Like a Fox and Picket Fences. She starred in the CBS Network series Charlie & Co. and The Royal Family. Reese's current projects include a new album based on her 27-city tour with her revue, "Some of My Best Friends Are the Blues," as well as song on the Touched By An Angel Soundtrack. Tea for Two
Della Reese Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Just tea for two
And two for tea
Just me for you
And you for me alone
Nobody near us to see us or hear us
No friends or relations
On weekend vacations
We won't have it known, dear
That we own a telephone, dear
Day will break and you'll wake
And start to bake a sugar cake
For me to take for all the boys to see
We will raise a family
A boy for you
And a girl for me
Oh, can't you see how happy we would be
The lyrics of Della Reese's classic song 'Tea for Two' speak about a couple picturing themselves sitting together drinking 'tea for two,' meaning that they are enjoying each other's company and nothing else matters. They imagine that they are alone, and no one is watching them. They even keep their phone away, and no one knows about their togetherness. They are only interested in each other and want to start a family together. The couple wants to live a simple and happy life with children, with a boy for her and a girl for him. The lyrics speak of their desire for happiness and peace in their lives.
The lyrics portray a deep love that the couple shares, and they have a simple existence in mind. The song is romantic yet grounded to reality, giving the listeners an instant classic. It describes a perfect little world that every couple would love to have for themselves - an intimate, peaceful haven that belongs only to them.
