Wight Is Wight
Delpech Michel Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Wight is Wight
Dylan is Dylan
Wight is Wight
Viva Donovan
C'est comme un soleil
Dans le gris du ciel
Wight is Wight, et
Hippie, hippie-pie
Hippie-pie
Hippie-pie

Ils sont arrivés dans l'île nue
Sans un bagages et les pieds nus
Comme un cyclone inattendu
Comme une fleur avant la saison
Comme une pluie de papillons
À laquelle on a jamais cru

Wight is Wight
Dylan is Dylan
Wight is Wight
Viva Donovan
C'est comme un soleil
Dans le gris du ciel
Wight is Wight, et
Hippie, hippie-pie
Hippie-pie
Hippie-pie

Toi qui a voulu t'emprisonner
As-tu le droit de condamner
Celui qui cherche à s'évader?
Chacun mène sa vie comme il veut
Tu ne peux plus baisser les yeux
Car aussi vrai que tu es né

Wight is Wight
Dylan is Dylan
Wight is Wight
Viva Donovan
C'est comme un soleil
Dans le gris du ciel
Wight is Wight, et
Hippie, hippie-pie
Hippie-pie

Wight is Wight
Dylan is Dylan
Wight is Wight
Viva Donovan
C'est comme un soleil
Dans le gris du ciel
Wight is Wight, et
Hippie, hippie, pie

Wight is Wight
La-la-la-la-la-la
La-la-la
La-la-la-la-la-la
La-la-la
La-la-la
La-la-la, la-la-la
La-la-la-la
La-la-la-la-la-la
La-la-la
La-la-la-la-la-la
La-la-la

La-la-la-la-la-la
La-la-la, la-la-la

Overall Meaning

The song "Wight Is Wight" by Delpech Michel is a tribute to the Isle of Wight Festival held in 1970, which was considered as one of the most significant moments of the hippie subculture. The opening phrase "Wight is Wight, Dylan is Dylan," highlights the festival's unique persona and the importance of legendary performers like Bob Dylan. The song paints a picture of how the festival-goers arrived, the type of atmosphere, the freedom, and the joy that was felt within the festival.

The song highlights the sentiments of freedom and self-expression that were at the heart of the hippie movement. The lyrics suggest that everyone should be allowed to live their lives, free from the limitations of society. The phrase "Chacun mène sa vie comme il veut" (Everyone leads their life as they want) reinforces the idea of freedom of choice and individualism. The hippie-pie refrain adds to the sense of joy, excitement, and care-freeness that characterized the festival.

Overall, the song celebrates the counterculture of the 1960s and the emergence of the hippie movement. It reflects the spirit of hopefulness and the desire for change that were felt by a generation disillusioned with the status quo.
