Brother
Demarco Mac Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
You're no better off
Living your life
Than dreaming at night
This much is true
But it's still up to you
To take my advice
So take it slowly, brother
Let it go now, brother
Take it slowly, brother
Let it go
Go home, go home
Go home, go home
You're better off dead
When your mind's been set
From nine until five
How could it be true
Well it's happened to you
So take my advice
And take it slowly, brother
Let it go now, brother
Take it slowly, brother
Let it go
Go home, go home
Go home, go home
Go home, go home
Go home, go home
Ah, ah, ah, ah
The song "Brother" by Demarco Mac is a poignant expression of frustration with the monotony and disillusionment of daily life. The first verse speaks to the idea that there is little difference between living one's life and dreaming at night, implying that life can feel surreal and unfulfilling. It seems to suggest that despite the inherent difficulties and challenges of existence, it's up to us to take the necessary steps to improve our quality of life.
The chorus encourages the listener to "take it slowly" and "let it go now." This can be interpreted as an emotional release or an attempt to take things one step at a time. The repetitive nature of the chorus and its emphasis on the phrase "go home" could suggest a longing for security, comfort, and familiarity. The line "you're better off dead" may seem nihilistic at first, but it could also be interpreted as a commentary on how the daily grind can be suffocating and feel like a slow death.
Overall, the lyrics of "Brother" are open to interpretation but highlight the challenges of life's daily struggles and the potential for growth and change to overcome them.

I must try and get to Chile.
It has always been a country with incredible colours. Think it even beats Italy.
And they produce good wine. Good colour equals good wine!
Haha.
Sorry, I mean the colour of the Earth and organic materials. Too beautiful.

Is it only me finding even the first guitar riff very nostalgic? For who plays guitar , I bet one of the first scale you learned is the pentatonic scale. I remember myself at 13/14/15 year-old being so excited to play kind of rocky and bluesy solos on a pentatonic. The first guitar riff of this song sounds like is played by an excited young guy who has just learned the pentatonic major and this resonates so much with me and it brings me back those days. It's so easy, beautiful and rocky. This whole thing is strange, it's very very nostalgic.
