After signing with Hollywood Records, Lovato released their pop rock debut album, Don't Forget (2008), which debuted at number two on the Billboard 200. Its follow-up, Here We Go Again (2009), debuted at number one in the U.S., while its title track reached number 15 on the Hot 100. Lovato's third studio album, Unbroken (2011), experimented with pop and R&B and spawned the U.S. platinum-certified single "Skyscraper". They released her eponymous fourth album in 2013, which debuted at number three on the Billboard 200, and contained the top-ten international hit "Heart Attack". Lovato's fifth and sixth albums, Confident (2015) and Tell Me You Love Me (2017), infused soul and mature themes; they earned a Grammy Award nomination for Confident, while "Sorry Not Sorry", the lead single from Tell Me You Love Me, became her highest-charting single in the U.S., reaching number six. After a hiatus, Lovato released their seventh album, Dancing with the Devil... the Art of Starting Over (2021), which reached number two on the Billboard 200.
On television, Lovato has starred as the titular character on the sitcom Sonny with a Chance (2009–2011), served as a judge on the music competition series The X Factor USA for its second and third seasons, and appeared as a recurring character on the musical comedy Glee (2013–2014) and the sitcom Will & Grace (2020). An activist for several social causes, Lovato's struggles with an eating disorder and substance abuse have received considerable media attention, in response to which they published the self-help memoir Staying Strong: 365 Days a Year (2013) and released the documentaries Demi Lovato: Simply Complicated (2017) and Demi Lovato: Dancing with the Devil (2021). In 2021, Lovato had come out as nonbionary.

I'm a little curious too
Tell me if it's wrong, if it's right, I don't care
I can keep a secret, could you?
Got my mind on your body and your body on my mind
Got a taste for the cherry, I just need to take a bite
Kiss one another
Die for each other
We're cool for the summer
(Ha)
Ooh
Ooh
Take me down into your paradise
Don't be scared 'cause I'm your body type
Just something that we wanna try
'Cause you and I
We're cool for the summer
Tell me if I won, if I did, what's my prize?
I just wanna play with you, too
Even if they judge, fuck it, I'll do the time
I just wanna have some fun with you
Got my mind on your body and your body on my mind
Got a taste for the cherry, I just need to take a bite
Don't tell your mother
Kiss one another
Die for each other
We're cool for the summer
(Ha)
Ooh
Ooh
Take me down into your paradise
Don't be scared 'cause I'm your body type
Just something that we wanna try
'Cause you and I (you and I)
We're cool for the summer (ha)
We're cool for the summer
We're cool for the summer
Shh, don't tell your mother
Got my mind on your body and your body on my mind
Got a taste for the cherry, I just need to take a bite
Take me down
Take me down into your paradise
(Don't) don't (be) be scared 'cause I'm your body type
Just something that we wanna try (wanna try)
'Cause you and I (you and I)
We're cool for the summer
(Take me down) we're cool for the summer
(Don't be scared) 'cause I'm your body type
(Just something) just something that we wanna try
'Cause you and I (you and I)
We're cool for the summer (ha)

We're cool for the summer
The song "Cool for the Summer" by Demi Lovato explores a summer romance between two people who are interested in each other sexually. The lyrics suggest a curiosity and a desire for something new and exciting, whether it is right or wrong. The singer admits to having a taste for the cherry, a metaphor for wanting to delve into the sensuality and passion of the moment. The chorus suggests that they are willing to keep their sexual play a secret, as the song implores the other person not to "tell your mother." Even if they are judged, the singer still wants to have fun and experience pleasure, even if it means doing time.
The verses speak of the singer's fascination with the other person's body and mind, and their eagerness to play together. The lyrics suggest that they are "cool for the summer," i.e., they are young and free-spirited, looking for some fun and adventure. They encourage the other person to take them down into their paradise, not to be scared because they are their body type. The singer is willing to try anything with this person because they are both interested in experimenting with their sexuality. The repeated use of the phrase "we're cool for the summer" reinforces the idea that they are both in it for a good time and not necessarily looking for a long-term commitment.
