The World Is A Thorn
Demon Hunter Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The gavel has fallen, along with the rest. Are we expected to settle for this?
Bring us the plague, lead us away. Blacken tomorrow with ash of today.
Can't you see the fabric of our standards wearing thin?
See your world in its grave at the hands of the enslaved.

Won't bow to man. Won't bow to government.
Won't trust in a failed system of self-fulfilling lust.
Won't love a world where my God is mocked. I defy.

Oh, a kiss on the serpent's head.
We walk in the line of deceit, the walking dead.
Can't you feel the ground of our discretion giving way?
Refusal of hope, solution demise. Bury the truth in a mountain of lies.

Won't bow to man. Won't bow to government.
Won't trust in a failed system of self-fulfilling lust.
Won't love a world where my God is mocked. I defy.

This is what you try to sell me. Subjective nothingness.
Pull your sickness from my throat.
Let me breathe the truth. Let me breathe the truth.

Won't bow to man. Won't bow to government.
Won't bow to greed. Won't bow to false hope.

Won't bow to self. Won't bow to modern code.
Won't sell my soul to a dead world. I defy.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Demon Hunter's "The World is a Thorn" speak about the singer's refusal to conform to the societal standards and the failing government system. The singer expresses their refusal to bow down to man, government, greed, self-fulfilling lust, false hope, and modern code. The lyrics condemn the deceptive nature of the world, where the truth is buried under a mountain of lies. The singer feels that the ground of their discretion is giving way, and the hope for a solution is diminishing.

The lyrics talk about kissing the serpent's head, which may be a reference to the biblical story of Adam and Eve, where they were tempted by the serpent to eat the forbidden fruit. The lyrics imply that the world has been walking on a line of deceit, leading them to become the walking dead. The singer seems to be frustrated with the subjective nothingness that society tries to sell them and wants to breathe the truth. The lyrics conclude by saying that they won't sell their soul to a dead world, and they defy.

In summary, "The World is a Thorn" lyrics express the resentment and frustration of the singer towards the failing government system and societal standards. The lyrics urge the listeners to defy the conventional norms and to stand up for themselves.

*****
First of all, I'm not an atheist. Second of all, even if I was, Atheism is not a religion. So nearly everything you said in that giant first paragraph falls away. As for naturalism and materialism, I would say that I'm open to the idea of something beyond nature, though as soon as we found it and understood it, it would then become part of the natural. Because that's all "nature" is; the way the universe works according to human understanding.

Serve the higher cause? Okay, you want to hear my morality in one sentence? Here:

"Anything that increases freedom for the individual is the ultimate good, and anything that decreases freedom for the individual is the ultimate sin!"

Simple enough. Note that this morality does not allow for selfishness that decreases the freedom of others. I.E., stealing is wrong.

You think your morality is objective? Here's a test: If God asked you to murder a family member, would you do it? If you answer no, then you yourself admit that you're willing to disobey God for your own interests, and therefore he is NOT the foundation of what you hold to be right and wrong. Here's another test: Do you think slavery is wrong? If yes then you admit that you disagree with God allowing it and even setting the ground rules for it, while even the pagan kingdom of Persia next door had already abolished slavery!

And yes, I compared sexuality with enthicity and disability because they are all things that cannot be controlled. And therefore it is immoral to impede someone's life and desires over something that is NOT their fault!

Lying and murdering to get my way? While I've never murdered anyone I will admit that I've lied a lot. And so have you. Does this make you or me a horrible person? I would say no. It just makes you human. As for killing to get my way? Well I consider life to be good, and if someone were about to end a life, say my own or a family member's/friend's, I would instantly jump in to end the life of the attacker and/or take the bullet for them. Murdering outright is against my morality.

"Since that be said, homosexuality increases insecurity, spiritual hindrance, mental stability, etc. It causes havoc for society."

Evidence please. Cite the studies. Publish the links to the papers. I want to see what data you drew this conclusion from. I don't very much like you saying this about LGBT people when members of my family are gay or bi. Both are out and proud so no insecurity there. The older one is happily married in a same sex union and has two healthy children. One of whom graduated with honors and one who now works in a tech company overseas. I doubt they could accomplish this with all this supposed mental instability. Oh, and all of them are christian or religious in some way.

Again, if sex is ONLY FOR PROCREATION then why did God make it much more pleasurable to just have sex than to have a child be born? And homosexuality is not "needed?" Your air conditioning is not needed either, so you better throw it out. And if God did not intend for homosexual sex to be in the equation, then why did he make it possible? Why did he create the male anatomy with tightly packed nerves in that area? Please explain this!

Also, your shoe analogy fails for three reasons:

1. You're assuming that the nature of two unrelated ideas are the same without providing evidence for this.
2. The idea of what makes a "pair" is subjective. I can say that a pair of shoes is simply two shoes together, regardless of their side.
3. Despite two shoes being the same side shoe, you can STILL wear them!

And your morality doesn't save you? Tell me, do you consider it good to accept Jesus as our lord and savior? Do you consider it bad to not do so? If yes, since you consider your morality to be objective and therefore must be the same morality as God's, then you ARE saved by your morals.

If Jesus loves me then I thank him for the love and I'll gladly consider returning it. But if I only need his love in order to save me from hell (which cannot exist with a loving god in charge) then no thanks because that's not love. That's Stockholm Syndrome.

Feel free to block me from posting. I'm only replying because you do.
