Tell Me Why
Den Harrow Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I can understand it
Money's what you're working for
But I'm not a bandit and I don't love war.
I can only find out what it takes to have a lot
I don't have no more doubt
I'll keep what I've got!
Tell me why
Tell me why
If sometimes you are happy
Tell me why
Tell me why other times you're down
Tell me why
Tell me why
Why some people are lucky
Tell me why
Tell me why life goes up and down.
Why is it that one guy's got everythin' going well
Why the other ones try
Have to work like hell?
When your life is sunny
Everybody's on your side
When it isn't funny
You have got to hide.
I don't know where to go if I will get an answer
It's such a mystery!
Anyway
Who can say if I'll be a romancer
Go down in history.
Tell me why
Tell me why
If sometimes you are happy
. . .
I don't even know yet how to make the world go round
To be rich or in debt
To get off the ground.
Don't know the reason
I think I'll never

Never know it
Who could ever answer? Maybe I wirr never I

Overall Meaning

In Den Harrow's "Tell Me Why," the singer grapples with the universal question of why some people seem to have it all while others struggle. He acknowledges the importance of money, but also rejects the idea of pursuing wealth at all costs, stating that he is "not a bandit" and does not love war. Despite this, he recognizes the value of having a lot and pledges to hold onto what he has. He then poses a series of questions, asking why some people are lucky while others are not, and why life can be full of ups and downs. He reflects on the fact that when times are tough, people are often left to hide, and expresses frustration at the fact that he may never know the answers to his questions.

Overall, "Tell Me Why" can be interpreted as a commentary on the human condition and the perpetual search for happiness and contentment. While wealth and success may be important to some, the song suggests that they are not the only path to fulfillment, and that there are deeper questions about life and the nature of prosperity that may never be fully answered. Den Harrow's lyrics are thought-provoking and poignant, and his contemplation of these issues will likely resonate with many listeners who have grappled with similar questions themselves.
