Cascades
Denai Moore Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Down by one
Easily undone
I can't explain
It comes in waves
Cascades to nothing

It's-it's the rougher rain
They drop in summer again
I can't explain
It comes in waves
Cascades to-

Do you mind if I lay my head here?
On your lap, could you be my boulder?
Laying flat, would you hold me hand and stay awake?
Baby

When it cascades
And things change
When it cascades
And things get in the way
When it cascades
And things change
When it cascades
And things get in the way

Am I convincing you yet?
Got my stoic faces to get
I can't explain
It comes in waves
Cascades to nothing (nothing)

Do you mind if I lay my head here?
On your lap, could you be my boulder?
Laying flat, would you hold me hand and stay awake?
Baby

When it cascades
And things change
When it cascades
And things get in the way
When it cascades
And things change
When it cascades
And things get in the way

Things get in the way

Oh I get down on myself
Oh I get down on myself
Things get in the way

When it cascades
And things change
When it cascades
And things get in the way
When it cascades
And things change

When it cascades
And things get in the way

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Denai Moore’s song Cascades is filled with emotive reactions to the feeling of being overwhelmed, uncertain, and troubled. The opening stanza "Down by one, easily undone" speaks of a struggle with keeping things together and maintaining composure. This is followed by "I can't explain, it comes in waves" indicating that these pressures are unpredictable and uncontrollable, much like the crashing of waves hitting the shore. The line "cascades to nothing" delves into the futility of struggling against these pressures, as the cascade disappears into nothingness.

The next verse features the imagery of a storm or rough rain, suggesting the idea of turbulent times in life. The reference to "summer again" reveals that this is a recurring event. The chorus is filled with repetition, echoing the idea of cascading and things getting in the way. The second verse ends with a plea for support when things go wrong. The songwriter seeks comfort and security. The chorus repeats these feelings in a more intensified form- when it cascades, things change, and things get in the way. The closing lyrics, "Oh, I get down on myself, things get in the way" highlight the emotional turmoil that is associated with this upheaval.

Oh my god, this is the most criminally underappreciated song on YouTube. Such an amazing gem that deserves so much more love. It improved my existence, fr, and I'm pretty sure I paid for Denai to live comfortable into retirement based on my repeated Spotify streams. 💕💕💕🙌🙌🙌

Denai this is probably the song I’ve listened on repeat to the most in all my 37 years. I’ve had a really hard time the past year or two and somehow this song pierces through all the despair and dread and just makes me feel alive. That motif in the second half of the chorus, the da-da, da-da, da-da dada-da. It’s so powerful to me somehow.
